Amerisleep company policy

Amerisleep is one of the more popular online bed-in-a-box mattress companies in America. The founders of Amerisleep had the initial idea for the company back in 2006 and the company as we know it today was established in 2010. They have done great things in that time. They were pioneers in the world of online mattress sales and have continued to innovate. They have developed their own memory foam, incorporated modern technologies, and moved to be more eco-friendly. They have an A+ BBB rating.

Shipping:  Amerisleep offers free shipping within the contiguous United States. Mattresses ship from their location in Indiana, so you can usually expect your mattress to arrive within a few days. They ship between three and five business days after placing your order (and shipping can take up to five days), but some may arrive as soon as the next day. They do warn about delays over busy shopping periods.

Old mattress removal:  Amerisleep do not offer old mattress removal.

Payment accepted, financing:  Amerisleep do not offer financing at this time.

Returns and refund:  Amerisleep offers free returns within the 100-night trial period. They claim that there are no hidden fees around returns and they are happy to exchange mattresses for a different model or offer a full refund. They also arrange for collection of the unwanted mattress and have measures in place to recycle these in keeping with their eco-friendly aims.

Sleep trial period:  All Amerisleep mattresses have a 100-night risk-free sleep trial period.

Warranties:  Amerisleep mattresses in this review are covered by a 20-year warranty.

Packaging and unpacking:  The Amerisleep AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5 all-foam and AS2, AS3, and AS5 hybrid mattresses are compressed, rolled, and come delivered in a cardboard box. The all-foam mattresses, as can be expected from memory foam, can take a couple of days to fully decompress. The hybrid mattresses should fully inflate a little quicker than this – usually by the first night.

Smell (off gassing), harmful chemicals:  You can expect slight off gassing on unboxing and you may notice a faint lingering smell for a day or two. The hybrid model is a little less noticeable than the all-foam variety. However, Amerisleep memory foams are largely plant-based and, according to their website, this low VOC polyurethane makes them a safer option. Amerisleep are also CertiPUR-US certified.

Where are the mattresses made?  Amerisleep mattresses are made in Indiana, USA.

Amerisleep mattress performance review

Across all their different models, Amerisleep make fantastic mattresses. While they are a little on the pricey side, I would say there is a corresponding value attached to the dollar amount on these mattresses. There is also a beauty to going to one company and knowing that there is a bed for you amongst the options. Whether you are petite or heavy; side, back, stomach, or combination sleeper, if you don’t mind memory foam, Amerisleep probably has your next bed.

Their popularity is backed up by performance. Nine times out of ten, owners of Amerisleep mattresses love them. The all-foam range consists of firm to soft options – and everything in between. As you climb from AS1 to AS5, so the mattresses get softer and the price increases. Their mid-level AS3 mattress is one of their most popular models and most people will find their dream bed in this range.

All-foam not for you? No problem. They make their AS2, AS3, and AS5 mattresses in hybrid varieties too and this comes with all the benefits of any hybrid bed when it comes to durability, coolness, and responsiveness. These are also a good choice for sleepers who are a bit heavier.

Lastly, I can’t talk about Amerisleep without talking about Celliant. All Amerisleep mattresses have a Celliant cover. We have come across this before in other mattress brands, but it definitely contributes to the performance of the mattress. There is a heap of research that has been done linking Celliant to increased circulation, recuperation after activity, and restfulness.

Whether you buy into the idea or not will come down to whether you can feel any significant difference. Everyone I know who’s tried it has said there is definitely something special about the quality of rest on Celliant. For me, Celliant is part of the bigger picture when it comes to comfort on an Amerisleep mattress.

Construction layers and materials used

All Amerisleep mattresses feature certain common layers.

Bio-Pur Foam: Developed by Amerisleep, plant-based Bio-Pur foam has a more open-cell construction than other memory foams. This aids in cooling and this layer provides pressure relief and that classic memory foam feel across all models.

Celliant cover: As touched on above, Celliant is reputed to have a host of benefits for wellness – particularly if you are an athlete or live an active lifestyle. Apart from these features, the covers on all the Amerisleep mattresses are breathable to aid with cooling.

Amerisleep AS1 Mattress

The Amerisleep AS1 is all about support. This starts at the base with the Bio-Core foundation level. The AS1 has eight inches of this support foam and is topped with two inches of Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur foam. This is topped with a breathable polyester/Celliant blended cover.

Amerisleep AS2 Mattress

The AS2 has a seven-inch base layer made from Bio-Core foam, followed by a zoned two-inch Hive transition layer for a combination of support and pressure relief. This mattress has three inches of Bio-Pur foam and a polyester/Celliant blended cover.

Amerisleep AS3 Mattress

The balance of support and softness could be what makes this Amerisleep’s most popular mattress. The seven-inch Bio-Core foam base is topped with a two-inch zoned Hive transitional layer, providing more softness and pressure relief under the hips and shoulders and support for the remainder of the body. This mattress has three inches of Bio-Pur foam and the polyester/Celliant blended cover.

Amerisleep AS4 Mattress

A little on the softer side, the AS4 has a seven-inch Bio-Core base, one inch of the zoned Hive transition layer, a four-inch Bio-Pur comfort layer, and the Celliant/polyester blended cover.

Amerisleep AS5 Mattress

The softest mattress in the Amerisleep all-foam range, the AS5 has a seven-inch Bio-Core base layer, two-inch zoned Hive transitional layer, two inches of Active Flex foam (which gives the mattress its softness), three inches of Bio-Pur foam, and the Celliant/polyester blended cover.

Amerisleep Hybrid Mattresses

Amerisleep AS2, AS3, and AS5 mattresses are also available as hybrid models, featuring a thin layer of transition foam at the base of the mattress, pocketed coils in the place of the Base-Core foam of the all-foam models, Bio-Pur foam, and the Celliant/polyester blended cover. The coils are also zoned to provide pressure relief under the shoulders and hips, with firmer coils under the lower back for support.

Amerisleep Mattresses firmness and pressure relief

The Amerisleep all-foam and hybrid mattresses come in a range of firmness levels, ranging from firm to soft. They also provide a combination of support and pressure relief features to cater for different sleeping positions.

Sleep position and body type

The different firmness levels as you go through the Amerisleep range will appeal to different sleeping positions and body types in different ways.

The all-foam mattresses are best for petite and average-sized people, while the hybrid models are suitable for all body types. If you are on the heavier side, I would recommend the hybrids over the all-foam varieties simply because the pocketed coils will give you way more support than memory foam.

I’m going to go through the best sleeping positions for each mattress individually:

AS1: Given the firmness profile of this mattress, it is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. It will give great support and alignment for these sleeping positions. If you are a side or combination side sleeper, you may want to go with something a little softer.

AS2: While the AS2 comes in at a medium-firm, similarly, it is best-suited to back and stomach sleepers – but it will also work well for combination sleepers.

AS3: The most popular model amongst sleepers, the medium AS3 is just right for all sleeping positions. It has a really good balance of support for stomach and back sleepers, whilst providing cushioning and pressure relief for side sleepers. A caveat here for stomach sleepers: as this model is a little softer, you may want to look to a firmer model for ideal support and alignment.

AS4: Coming in at a medium-soft, the AS4 is aimed at people who are predominantly side sleepers or combination sleepers. It will be important for stomach and back sleepers to remember that there is support that comes with firmness.

AS5: As you’d expect, this soft model is for side sleepers. The construction and contouring of this mattress makes it a super choice for that invaluable pressure relief side sleepers are after in a mattress.

The hybrid models, while designed to be a coil version of their all-foam counterparts in terms of firmness, are slightly different. They offer that zoned coil construction, so firmness is slightly altered depending on the zone of the mattress. The hybrid construction also gives these mattresses a more responsive feel than that deep sleeping feeling of the all-foam mattresses. This doesn’t mean they don’t offer a comfortable softness – they do! If you aren’t a fan of that pure memory foam feeling, the hybrids strike a perfect balance.

AS2h: This medium-firm mattress provides support for side and stomach sleepers.

AS3h: A happy medium, this mattress is for all sleeping positions – great if you and your partner have different sleeping preferences or if you are a combination sleeper.

AS5h: This soft hybrid mattress is for side sleepers. It performs exceptionally well in providing pressure relief to avoid waking up with aches and pains.

Amerisleep Mattress edge support

Memory foam mattresses are not revered for offering fantastic edge support. On the Amerisleep all-foam mattresses, the edge support is relatively good. I don’t think most people who sleep right up to the edge of the bed will have a problem, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the foam construction will have an impact here. The hybrid models’ edge support is also pretty good.

Amerisleep mattress temperature regulation

All Amerisleep mattresses are temperature neutral. That said, the hybrid mattresses do give you a slightly cooler night sleep – by a hair.

The all-foam Amerisleep mattresses provide real contouring, which can be a blessing and a curse. The more you sink into a mattress, the warmer you will be – so this is something to think about if you weigh a bit more than average.

It’s noteworthy on the all-foam mattresses that the Amerisleep Bio-Pur foam has an open-cell construction. What this means is that it offers more airflow than typical memory foams and so will sleep cooler than some of its memory foam counterparts on the market. The Celliant cover is also very breathable and so contributes to cooling on all models of Amerisleep mattresses.

The hybrid models sleep ever so slightly cooler. I think this comes down to a few different factors. First, hybrid mattresses generally are cooler (the pocketed coils promote ventilation). In the case of the Amerisleep hybrids, the added responsiveness also means you may sleep more on top of the bed, which also serves to keep you cool.

Motion isolation and noise

The Amerisleep all-foam mattresses perform really well when it comes to motion isolation and noise – as most memory foam mattresses tend to do. In all of our tests, we observed that they deaden motion and are almost completely soundless on movement.

The Amerisleep hybrid models were also very impressive when it came to these factors. Although there was a slight motion transferal detected on movement, this isn’t the kind of movement which will disturb you from your slumber – unless you are a very light sleeper. Similarly, we noticed no sound. However, I anticipate this may change as the coils age.

Is Amerisleep suitable for couples and sex?

The downside to an all-foam mattress when it comes to sex is that it can take a little extra effort to change positions. The Amerisleep all-foam mattresses have that classic memory foam feel and, while this is great for contouring and cradling the body, it is a bit of a con for sex.

This is not the case with the hybrid mattresses. The combination of coils and foam in these mattresses make them significantly more responsive, with more of that on-top-of-the-bed feeling. This mix of a little added bounce and responsiveness means changing position is easier on the hybrids.

On both varieties, the silence of the mattresses in response to motion is a benefit of the bed – especially if your walls are thin.

When it comes to edge support, you are getting good to very good support all the way to the perimeter of the mattress. If you are shopping with this as one of your primary considerations, there are some other mattresses that perform better. However, I believe most people won’t have any complaints on this front.

Durability and longevity

The quality of Amerisleep mattresses is part of what makes their good reputation so abiding. In large part, this comes down to materials. The support foam in the all-foam mattresses is to a very high standard and you can reasonably expect your mattress to survive to the average lifespan of most mattresses, if not longer.

The hybrid mattresses are also remarkably durable – as is the case with hybrid mattresses over all-foam mattresses. As with the all-foam Amerisleeps, the hybrid varieties also feature high-quality construction which will contribute to the longevity of the mattress.

Just a reminder that this will also come down to you. If you are heavier and sleep on an all-foam mattress, you can expect your mattress to deteriorate a little faster. Mattress care can extend the lifespan of your mattress.

Amerisleep recommends that their mattresses are used on a solid, even surface.

Amerisleep mattress complaints

Amerisleep mattresses are largely loved by the people that own them. Amongst the myriad good reviews, I managed to find the following customer complaints.

  • One couple reported back pain and a lack of support for side and back sleepers with the AS4 mattress, particularly on the edge of the mattress.
  • One customer complained that he received poor customer service after the foundation for the bed appeared not to support the mattress on delivery. He attempted to make amendments to the foundation and claimed a reimbursement. He said it took too long for the issue to be resolved.
  • A few complaints related to difficult returns and some felt misled by the returns policy. As always, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of every company’s returns policy so that, if something goes wrong, you are apprised of the position beforehand to avoid disappointment.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Amerisleep mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4/5

4/5

I would definitely recommend the Amerisleep mattress brand – and I believe many of you out there would be extremely satisfied with the AS3 models, which cover the sleeping needs of most people. They aren’t the cheapest mattresses available, but I am sold on value here. The quality of these mattresses – and the sleep you will have on them – is worth the financial investment and I always appreciate a company that refuses to stagnate. Little touches like the Celliant cover, their specially developed foams, the thought that goes into clever constructions all come together to make superb mattresses.
