Brooklyn Bedding company policy

Brooklyn Bedding is the result of two brothers’ desire to create great mattresses. In 1995, they set out to better understand existing mattress models and construction, which went on to inform their designs. They started out selling on Amazon and it was such a success that they branched out on their own at brooklynbedding.com as some of the first bed-in-a-box mattress pioneers in the industry.

Today, Brooklyn Bedding still has those all-important family values running through their veins. They continue to manufacture from their own facilities in Phoenix, Arizona which regulates quality and price – knowing that this matters to many consumers. The result is a range of beds made to a higher standard and, in the case of some models, extremely affordably. They also have an A+ BBB rating.

If you like to buy from a company that supports worthy causes, Brooklyn Bedding has chosen children as their focus. They provide bedding and sleep accessories to families in need and children in vulnerable situations to help children meet their basic sleep requirements.

Payment accepted, financing:  Brooklyn Bedding has three, six, and 12-month finance options available through Affirm.

Packaging and unpacking:  Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are bed-in-a-box mattresses, which means they are compressed, rolled, wrapped in plastic, and will arrive at your home in a cardboard box. These mattresses do weigh quite a bit so you might need to enlist someone to help. While all these mattresses are good to go as soon as you unbox them, it might take a couple of days for them to reach their actual firmness.

Smell (off gassing), harmful chemicals:  There is a slight new mattress smell once your mattress has been released from its wrapping. This should fully disappear in a day or two. Foams are CertiPUR-US certified and the Talaylay latex in the Bloom model has Oeko-Tex Class 1 Certification.

Where are the mattresses made?  Brooklyn Bedding makes their own mattresses at their manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

Brooklyn Bedding mattress performance review

We are huge fans of the beds available from Brooklyn Bedding. If you are shopping for a mattress, it’s more than likely that one of their models is going to fit the profile you are looking for.

Let’s be honest, shopping for a mattress is not something you want to do over and over again if you don’t have to – and that’s one of the reasons I am all for hybrid mattresses: durability. When you shop for a hybrid, the first thing you will notice is selection. If you are looking for an affordable mattress, there’s the Signature and the Titan. If you are looking for more of a specialist mattress, there’s the Spartan, Bloom, and Aurora.

There’s one constant through all the mattress models from Brooklyn and it is quality. You get incredible value for your dollars with these mattresses – even those which are priced higher than most. And, while everybody is different and some may dislike these mattresses, I think most will find they provide everything that matters in a mattress – from simple, all-round comfort to pressure relief, support, and specialized features for different types of sleepers.

Construction layers and materials used

Brooklyn Bedding Signature

The Signature mattress is the most popular bed from Brooklyn Bedding. The Signature has a quilted cover on top of two foam layers. The first foam layer is Brooklyn Bedding’s TitanFlex Foam, which has the comfort of foam but behaves like latex in responsiveness. It’s also infused with TitaniumGel which offers some cooling properties. The next layer is Energex foam, which has similar qualities to TitanFlex. It also provides a little invaluable support between the top comfort layer and the coils.

The foam layers are on top of six-inch Ascension coils, which are individually wrapped to give the mattress superior motion isolation in comparison with traditional innerspring beds. This rests finally on a one-inch support foam base.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

The Aurora is the mattress in the range which offers cooling properties – and active cooling features are present in its construction. Firstly, it has a TitanCool cooling cover. Underneath this is a layer of their CopperFlex foam which, like TitanFlex, is a foam with more of a responsive latex feel. This copper-infused foam has a TitanCool phase change surface to it which draws heat away from the body. This is on top of a layer of TitanFlex which adds to the support and comfort of the mattress.

These foam layers and the coils below are separated by Swirl Visco-Elastic Memory Foam which offers contouring and support – and also aids with cooling. This acts as a buffer for the Ascension coils, which sit upon a thin high-density foam base.

Brooklyn Bedding Spartan

The construction of the Spartan mattress aids in rapid recovery for active individuals. This mostly comes down to the performance cover. There are some similarities to Celliant, which you may have come across in other mattress reviews. According to Brooklyn Bedding, this cover uses what they call Far Infrared Rays technology which uses body heat to transfer energy back to the body for assisted recovery after exercise and enhanced rest.

This covers the CopperFlex foam layer, which has a TitanCool phase change surface for cooling. The copper infusion has antibacterial properties. Under this is a layer of TitanFlex responsive foam, which also serves to move body heat away from sleepers. These layers rest on Swirl Visco-Elastic memory foam which acts as a transitional layer between the foam layers and the coils beneath and enhances the contouring of the mattress as a whole.

Lastly, the Spartan has eight-inch Ascension coils and a thin layer of high-density base foam.

Brooklyn Bedding Bloom

The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom has natural materials for those looking for hypoallergenic and environmentally sustainable properties to their mattresses. The all-natural top is made from quilted wool and organic cotton, which is intrinsically breathable and perfect for anyone with health concerns around their mattress materials.

Next up is a layer of pressure relieving Oeko-Tex Class 1 Talaylay Latex. Latex is also a natural material – and one of the healthiest for use in mattresses. The Ascension coils offer great support from the bottom up, with a thin layer of high-density foam at the base.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Luxe Hybrid

Sometimes there is beauty in simplicity – and this is the case with the Titan Luxe Hybrid. It has a quilted top with gel-infused memory foam which gives it its neutral foam feel, but with that little bit of added cooling. This is followed by a layer of transitional foam and Ascension coils, as well as one inch of high-density base foam.

Brooklyn Bedding mattress firmness and pressure relief

All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses offer different dynamics when it comes to firmness and pressure relief – and some have firmness options to choose from too. Let’s look at each model individually. Right from the start, as these mattresses are recommended for all body types, it is worth saying that the heavier you are, the softer these mattresses will feel. On the other hand, the more petite you are, the more likely you are to find the mattresses harder than described.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature

This mattress has three firmness levels – soft, medium, and firm. The soft comes in somewhere between true soft and medium-soft. The medium is a little softer than many may expect and is between a medium and medium-soft. Rather than being a true firm, the firm option is more of a medium-firm.

All three varieties offer varying levels of pressure relief – enough for side sleepers on all three types. This comes down to the foams, which are responsive and contouring (and, wow, the soft option does everything you’d hope to cradle hips and shoulders if you’re a side or combination side sleeper).

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

The Aurora also comes in three firmness levels. The soft in this case is, in fact, a true soft. The medium, however, is more of a medium-soft and the firm is a medium firm. Across all three varieties, you’re getting great pressure relief and responsiveness.

Brooklyn Bedding Spartan

Similarly, the Spartan also has three firmness levels. The soft is a medium-soft, the medium is a medium, and the firm is more of a medium-firm. The pressure relief here is greatest in the soft model (which is often the case) and more than adequate for most side sleepers in the medium model, but I would caution that side sleepers might find the firm model lacks the pressure relief they need.

Brooklyn Bedding Bloom

The Bloom’s three firmness levels are soft which feels like more of a medium-soft, medium, and firm which is more of a medium-firm. The Bloom has plenty of pressure relief for side sleepers in their soft and medium mattresses, while the firm might not be the best option for strict side sleepers. In all, though, I think most people will like the support and pressure relief from these mattresses.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Lux Hybrid

The Hybrid comes in one standard firmness: medium. The combination of the foams used, together with the support of the coils, gives this mattress enough pressure relief and support to cater for all sleeping positions.

Sleep position and body type

As all these mattresses from Brooklyn are hybrids, all models are suitable for all body types. It’s important to note that your physique will have an impact on the feeling of the bed. Firmer models tend to feel softer the heavier you are. If you are especially petite, firm mattresses can feel a little firmer than they would to average-sized people. With different firmness levels and features across each model, we’ve looked briefly into sleep position across each model to give you an idea of the best mattress for you.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature

The Signature soft is probably a little too soft for strict back and stomach sleepers, but provides a whole heap of pressure relief for side sleepers.

As the medium option is a little on the softer side of medium, side sleepers will love the medium too – with great pressure relief for time spent sleeping on your side, but also that extra bit of support for when you’re on your back or stomach. The medium is the most accommodating of the three firmness levels and a safe bet if you’re not sure on your sleeping preference or are looking to strike a compromise as a couple.

The firm option is best for anyone who spends more time on their backs and stomachs. This comes down to support in these positions. If you are in the heavy weight category, we would recommend looking at the firm option first too.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

The Aurora is also a little on the softer end of the spectrum. The soft option is really soft, which is great if you are a side sleeper or someone who struggled with aches and pains in your shoulders and hips.

The medium option is still pretty soft. If you sleep in a combination of positions during the night, most combination sleepers will find the medium a good fit, but I would probably say this is only the case if you are predominantly a side sleeper. Back and stomach sleepers simply won’t get the support they need in these positions.

The firm is about a medium-firm. This is a good choice for combination sleepers worried about the softness of the medium model when on their stomachs and backs. If you are shopping for the Aurora because you are a hot sleeper, the firm will also be worth thinking about first because the firmness will help you to sleep on top of the mattress, which can have an effect on cooling. As above, this will be our recommendation for heavy individuals too.

Brooklyn Bedding Spartan

The thinking behind the Aurora translates almost exactly to the Spartan. While the soft option has more of a medium-soft feel, this option is mainly for side sleepers. The medium is about a medium-firm and we think all sleeping positions will be more than comfortable on this option. It’s struck an almost perfect balance between support and pressure relief for combination sleepers.

If you are a strict back and stomach sleeper – or if you weigh, say, more than 230lbs – check out the firm option first. It’s the model most likely to meet your needs when it comes to support.

Brooklyn Bedding Bloom

The same would apply to the three firmness options of the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom. The softness of the latex is very comfortable for side sleepers on both the soft and medium options, while stomach and back sleepers should look to the medium and firm options. If you’re heavy, go straight to the firm for the best combination of latex comfort and support from the coils.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Luxe Hybrid

The Titan Luxe Hybrid comes in one firmness level – medium-firm. It is a fantastic mattress for support. If you are a back or stomach sleeper (or if you’re a bit heavier and a side sleeper), the Titan Luxe Hybrid will likely tick a lot of boxes for you. If you are a combination sleeper, rolling on to your side occasionally during the night, you will probably get away with it. That said, I would urge you to look to one of Brooklyn Beddings’ softer models for that added bit of pressure relief on your side.

Brooklyn Bedding edge support

The edge support in all five models is average to good. If you sleep right on the edge of your mattress – or if you and your partner are looking to share a smaller model – most people won’t have a problem with edge support on these beds.

Brooklyn Bedding mattress temperature regulation

Let’s start with the Aurora mattress. This is an active cooling mattress which means, if you sleep hot and you’re shopping around this, it is a great option for you. It’s got an active cooling cover which is copper-infused. The foams are open-cell for breathability – and this is further enhanced by the coils. As mentioned earlier in this Brooklyn Bedding mattress review, the firmer option is the best choice for cooling too. The Aurora is temperature neutral to cool.

The other models are all temperature neutral and have features around cooling which make them this way. Most sleepers won’t have any complaints around sleeping hot on these mattresses.

Motion isolation and noise

All five mattresses provide minimal motion transfer – especially considering that they are of hybrid construction, which can be a little more sensitive to movement. This will come down to the individually pocketed coils. Unless you are very sensitive to movement while you sleep, we think you will be just fine on any of the Brooklyn Bedding mattresses.

You can also expect each of these mattresses to be quiet. While some slight creaking was heard on most, we couldn’t detect any sound from the Spartan and Bloom. Hybrid beds can get a little creaky with age.

Is Brooklyn Bedding suitable for couples and sex?

This always comes down to preference, but there are certain features of the Brooklyn Bedding mattresses which most couples prefer. These mattresses are quite bouncy and responsive, with a neutral foam feel, which makes movement across the surface of the mattress quick and easy. This is good for changing position and tends to be a big plus for sex.

The soft and medium models of these mattresses are soft, however, and this will have a bearing on sex too. Some people don’t like moving around on softer mattresses, while others find it gives a bit of grip during sex.

Durability and longevity

One of the things we love most about Brooklyn Bedding is the craftsmanship of their mattresses. The quality of their materials and how they are put together mean you are getting a mattress which should last at least the average lifespan of mattresses in its class – if not more with a bit of additional care. Hybrid beds also have the advantage of extended longevity over all-foam models, which is something to remember if you are torn between a hybrid and a memory foam bed.

Brooklyn Bedding mattress complaints

A few customers reported having a bad experience in online reviews. The main complaints were around the following:

  • Customers were unhappy with the customer service – usually around shipping, complaints, and the difficulty around returns.
  • While many people giving negative reviews countered their complaints with compliments around the overall quality of the mattress, some simply did not like the feel of the mattress – finding it too hard or too soft.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Brooklyn Bedding mattress brand?

OUR RATING
