  • Anyone wanting to limit motion transfer, restless sleepers or their partners.
  • People prone to allergies or wanting to deep clean their bed (all Casper mattresses resist germs/ mites and have a removable cover for spot-cleaning).

Who won’t love the Casper mattress?

  • Edge sleepers.
  • People who like an extra firm mattress.
  • People wanting immediate results or who want the bounce from spring-based mattresses. Customers swapping from spring mattresses to Casper mattresses sometimes need some time to re-adjust. Hybrid editions of the Casper Wave and The Casper are now available (and cost around $100 more) but have resilient springs in the base layer.
  • Some customers noticed a chemical odor after unwrapping the mattress. Casper advises letting the mattresses offgass in a well ventilated room.

Payment accepted, financing:  Pay using Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover credit cards, or by Debit/ Bank card, PayPal or Apple Pay.  Financing options are available for orders over $350 through partner agent Affirm (not available in Iowa or W. Virginia). More details of finance options here: https://casper.com/financing/

Returns and refund:  Casper allows customers a 100 day trial period, to test out the mattress and see if it works for you. If, during the trial, you are unhappy and want to return this, contact their Customer Services team who will arrange for a collection and issue a refund (with no fees or hidden expenses, T’s and C’s apply).

Sleep trial period:  Casper offers a 100-day ‘risk-free’ sleep trial period allowing customers 3 months to test out the mattress. Customers should contact customer services if they are unhappy during the trial and want to arrange a collection, payment is refunded, and your rejected mattress is either donated to a local charity or recycled. Note; if you are buying your mattress through Amazon and not direct from Casper this may shorten your trial duration.

Warranties:  The mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty that covers: mattress deterioration, where indentation of over 1 inch is visible and not caused by using an unsuitable bed base. Also, any cracking or splitting of the foam occurring under normal circumstances or handling.  Any defects of the zipper system on the mattress cover is also covered.

Packaging and unpackaging:  If you buy the in-home setup at checkout Casper sends a trained employee to unbox and set up your mattress, foundation, and/or bed frame and remove your old mattress. Don´t sweat if you are doing this yourself as the box includes unboxing/ set up instructions and removing the packaging takes around 5 minutes. Depending on what size mattress you ordered, be warned the box can be heavy for one person to lift. Once the mattress is free from the box it´ll begin to expand. Set it on your bed base for a few hours so it can fully regain shape.

Off-gassing and odor:  Sometimes memory foam mattresses can give off a chemical-like odor when they are first unpacked because of the manufacturing and packaging process. If you experience this, let your mattress air out completely for 2 to 3 days in a well ventilated room so the odor can dissipate more quickly.

Casper mattress performance

Generally, foam mattresses are made from memory foam, latex or gel memory foam and some Casper mattresses use a combination of all three. While memory foam responds to your size, shape, and weight to reduce stress on your pressure points, latex foam will feel more plush and comfortable. Gel memory foam, contours, cools and improves airflow and is also resistant to dust mites. Foams come in either high density, medium or low-density grades and although high density lasts the longest, medium density is better for couples as its ideal for limiting motion transfer.  When looking at overall thickness, thicker mattresses are usually softer than thinner mattresses, with the base layer of foam providing the main support core.

Construction layers and materials used

The foam in Casper mattresses are certified by the CertiPUR-US® program and are environmentally friendly made without using ozone-depleting chemicals. They are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). CASPER SLEEP INC has 8 different patents registered against their selection of mattresses, bed frames and pillows designed and developed in their product testing labs in San Francisco.

The Casper

The Casper is the original award-winning 12-inch mattress made from 4 foam layers, featuring a tier of zoned support and a soft breathable top layer of open-cell perforated polyfoam to help airflow.  Its second layer has pressure relieving memory foam, with a third transition layer – dividing into 3 cross-sections, a center-section to support your weight-bearing hips/trunk and a top and bottom area relieving your neck/shoulders and feet.  It’s like a jigsaw layer made from different foam for targeted support.  Underneath this sits the high-density polyfoam supportive base layer.

The Essential

The Essential’s 3 foam layers expands to 11 inches. Its base layer of dense support foam reinforces a middle layer of pressure relieving responsive memory foam, designed for sinkage and contouring. Its top layer of open-celled, springy, breathable fusion cools you down. This Medium-Firm mattress has a grey poly-knit upholstery grade zipped removable cover for spot cleaning, (not machine washable). Like most memory foam mattresses, The Essential is temperature neutral, with a soft foam feel and an affordable price tag.

The Wave

The Wave is an advanced, ergonomic, luxury foam mattress.  At 13 inches deep, its 5 layers are designed around Hyper-Targeted Support™ assisting your lower back and providing pressure point relief for your shoulders and hips with gel pods and a layer of perforated foam designed to support spinal alignment and relieve aches and pains. We recommend The Wave if you weigh over 220 lbs. The mattress is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. So, if you have chronic pain or ailments like back pain, hip pain or sciatica why not give this soft-firm mattress a trial. Its top layer of open-cell foam circulates airflow to cool down ‘hot sleepers’. It has a soft foam feel and is ideal for couples. The Wave has a good level of edge support and like all Casper mattresses comes with a removable cover for spot-cleaning.

The hybrid edition

The Casper and The Wave are also available in a hybrid version. The hybrid version has an additional layer of resilient springs in the base layer and enhanced edge support. (recommended for heavier people or those wanting the support of springs). The Casper comes with a soft and comfortable removable cover.

Firmness and feel options

All feedback is subjective, relying on the reviewers height to weight ratio as well as their past experience. Almost all foam mattresses soften over time, so what starts out as a Medium Firm mattress, can and will soften up years later to become Soft-Medium.

The Casper:  Medium Firm Mattress. We’d rank it a 6 out of 10 for firmness, with a soft, balanced foam feel letting you move around easily, and with a good amount of bounce. The Casper hybrid version has resilient springs inside its base layer adding to the firmness and support.

The Essential:  Medium Firm mattress, supportive and bouncy with a responsive feel. The top 2 inches of open cell polyfoam which lay above the middle layer of memory foam create a soft, classic foam feel. Our team give this a 6/10 for firmness.

The Wave:  Medium Firm mattress with a neutral, soft foam feel that’s responsive with a good bounce ratio. It’s Zoned Support has a denser firmer layer in the center third to accommodate sleepers heavier trunk and hips, with more pressure relief directed toward your shoulders and feet. The thickest out of all the Casper mattresses, we are ranking it 6.5 out of 10 for firmness

Casper edge support

Foam mattresses aren’t ideal for edge sleepers. However, The Wave and The Casper hybrid editions now come with improved edge support, so if you are a committed edge sleeper these are better suited to you.

Body types and pressure relief

The Casper is the mid-range mattress for sleepers with light to medium body frames (under 220 lbs). A recent redesign meant the mattresses latex layer was replaced by polyurethane foam, increasing its pressure relieving capacity and overall thickness. Offering great pressure relief, its Zoned Support layer is firmer in the center of the mattress and softer under your shoulders, so back and stomach sleepers find it firmer whereas side sleepers find it softer. Avoid this mattress if you weigh over 220lbs as it will sag around the shoulders and hips, instead try the hybrid version with coiled support inside the base layer.

The Essential: Casper’s a budget, affordable mattress made from 3 layers. Its memory foam layer offers a good level of body contouring, support and pressure relief for your trunk shoulders and feet and is best suited to sleepers with a petite to medium size body frames (weighing under 220lbs). The base layer of high-density polyfoam is what gives this simpler mattress its core firmness and support.

The Wave:  Casper’s high-end luxury foam mattress engineered around Hyper-Targeted Support™ assists your lower back, giving you pressure point relief for your shoulders and hips, using gel pods and a layer of perforated foam that encourage spinal alignment. The mattress is designed to help people with back, hip or neck pain and other conditions like sciatica, and is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. This mattress suits any body size, especially people over 220 lbs. Its hybrid version has responsive springs in the base layer for people wanting the contour and comfort of memory foam, but the support and firmness of springs.

Sleep position

Back sleepers normally want a medium-firm mattress that supports their spine, whereas stomach sleepers like mattresses made from firmer foam, and side sleepers prefer softer mattresses so their body can be contoured and comforted as they sink into a supportive sleep.  Mattresses must respond to your pressure points, distributing your body weight evenly. Casper mattress are engineered to maintain spinal alignment across most sleep positions:

The Casper:  Ideal for side, back, stomach or combination sleepers. Although stomach and back sleepers will find the mattress on the firmer side, side sleepers will think it is softer.

The Essential:  Suggested for back, stomach, combination and side sleepers. Back and stomach sleepers will enjoy the Medium Firm feel of this mattress, but it´s maybe not the best if you are a side sleeper wanting a soft plush mattress you can easily sink into.

The Wave:  The luxury ergonomic mattress works for side, stomach, back, or combination sleepers and is great for larger body frames weighing over 200lbs. The mattress is Medium Firm on the softness and firmness scale and comes in a Casper hybrid version with supportive coils inside the base layer.

Casper temperature regulation

Casper mattresses are temperature neutral. Generally, all-foam beds can feel warmer than hybrids because foam stores your body heat as you sleep. Sleeping on a Casper mattress won’t make you break out into a hot sweat and it won’t offer a miracle cure for naturally sweaty sleepers.

All of the Casper mattress covers are naturally breathable and the open cell structure of the top layer of foam is designed around air circulation, using convection and conduction to direct heat away from your body, as the memory foam layer pulls heat out into this top perforated layer. Feedback from our team is that Casper mattresses cope well with regulating your temperature as you sleep.

Motion isolation and noise

If you’re a light or restless sleeper or share a bed with one, you’ll know the value of having a mattress that absorbs motion and still lets you move around easily without feeling like you´re sinking into quicksand. Casper foam mattresses work well at limiting the impact of movement and absorbing disruptive motion around you. Take note that although Casper mattress hybrid versions now feature resilient coils in their base layer, our feedback is these mattresses are still quiet.

Is Casper suitable for couples and sex?

Casper’s foam mattresses are responsive and have bounce, letting couples easily move positions, whether resting or at play. The Casper mattresses support a variety of sleep and sexual positions.  Unlike traditional memory foam mattresses where sleepers can get a sinking feeling, Casper’s Zoned Support™ layer uses firmer foam inside the center section to give you a comfortable, balanced feel of pressure relief and support. This zoned support stops heavier parts of your body dipping in the bed.

But, this can also help couples when their combined body weight is focused in one area (eg. during sex).  Some customer feedback claimed the mattresses can struggle with weight distribution over longer time frames, as the foam can sink out of alignment – although manufacturers advise customers to rotate their mattresses regularly to stop this happening.

Durability and longevity

Memory foam mattresses often have a lifespan of between 7 to 10 years, although Casper’s manufacturers offer a 10 year warranty. Online customer reviews are mixed. Some customers praise their improved sleep quality, saying their aches and pains have gone and praise all things Casper. Others complained of curling up at the sides, sagging and denting. Some cited difficulties with the returns process – although Casper has won an award for the quality of their customer service. (Our team suggest for you to keep the mattresses original box and packaging throughout your 100 day trial, just in case).

Customers, buying their second Casper mattress noticed that in newer editions the latex layer has been replaced with polyurethane foam (which the company says keeps the bounce of the latex but has increased pressure relief and density of a foam), however, some customers were unconvinced.

Bed base

Casper mattresses are ideal for the following bed bases: an adjustable bed frame or a solid platform base, or a slatted bed frame (with slats 1.5 inches wide or more and spaced at less than 4 inches apart).

If you are pairing the mattress with a standard bed frame, buy a Mattress Foundation which gives you a firm base support and height. The manufacturers urge customers not to use a Casper mattress with a box spring bed as the mattress needs an even flat supportive surface, and a box spring bed could potentially damage your mattress. You can twin your Casper mattress with a divan bed, as long as it has slats and not springs. Although you may need to add plywood or a bed board underneath your mattress for additional support.

Summary of the Casper mattress range

With a string of awards and positive reviews, Casper must be doing something right. We really think that The Casper and The Essential offer value for money and with their 100 days no risk free trial, if you’re not convinced just send it back for a full refund. Plus, its top layer of breathable open-cell foam helps you sleep cool, making it temperature neutral. As it absorbs disruptive motion perfectly and is noise free, its recommended for couples.

The Casper is still their most popular seller. If you want some luxury or if you want to get rid of your aches and pains, then The Wave’s ergonomically engineered mattress is your best option – especially if you weigh over 220lbs. Don’t forget the hybrid edition of The Casper and The Wave now use integrated springs in the base layer for memory foam contouring and targeted pressure relief, together with coiled support.

Casper’s customer service has helped earn them A+ BBB rating. Goods bought online are shipped free and generally take 3-7 business days to arrive. Buy a Casper mattress, and if during your sleep trial period you want it returned, collection is arranged within days. You can pay using Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover credit cards, or by Debit/ Bank card, PayPal or Apple Pay, financing options are available if you spend over $350.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Casper mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4.5/5

4.5/5

Scan online reviews and you’ll see customers raving about how Casper mattresses changed their lives. But, if you dig a little deeper there’s also some complaints over sagging and indentations as the cheaper of these mattresses can struggle with heavy weight distribution. Some customers even argued that the targeted zone support in The Wave exacerbated their aches and pains. However, all returned Casper mattresses are donated to local charities and their website claims over 70,000 goods have been gifted to people and dogs who need somewhere to sleep (note, they make dog beds too).

FAQ

How long will a Casper Mattress last?

Each Casper mattress has a 10 year warranty.  Many foam mattresses soften and can also experience sinkage.  To prolong the life of your mattress rotate it with the seasons and use a firm, flat, supportive bed base, like a platform bed or one with sturdy wide wooden slats. The Casper foundation is recommended to support your bed base and is designed to keep your mattress in shape, the retailer also suggests buying a waterproof mattress protector.

Do casper mattresses sag?

All all-foam mattresses soften over time and mattresses that started out as Medium Firm will soften through the years to become Soft-Medium.  Buying a mattress foundation and rotating the mattress every 3-6 months helps prevent this.  Some customers raised concerns over indentations and sagging caused by difficulties with weight distribution. If you are on the heavier side (over 220 lbs) we suggest buying the denser The Wave mattress with more supportive layers, or else a hybrid version with integrated springs in the base layer.

Is there a weight limit for the Casper Mattress?

Although on their website Casper claim there´s no weight limit to their mattresses, our team suggests The Casper and Casper Essential are better for people with a small to medium size body frame (under 180lbs).  People over 200 lbs will get better support from the Casper Wave, which is a thicker mattress with more layers.  Or alternatively, choose a hybrid version of The Casper and Casper Wave which costs 100 dollars more but has coils inside the base layer and improved edge support.

Should you flip the Casper Mattress?

No, don´t flip these as each layer of a Casper mattress has a specific purpose and is layered in order.  Thats why you must make sure you always have the correct side facing up.  Instead of flipping your mattress rotate it at 180 degrees every 3-6 months.

Is Casper mattress worth it?

The Casper mattress range features their affordable Essential mattress targeted at students and customers on a tight budget, their mid-range The Casper - aimed at young professionals and their top-end, scientifically engineered luxury mattress, The Wave.  The Casper is made from quality material offering value for money comfort, as does their cheaper but less complicated Essential mattress.  The Wave, although scientifically engineered for targeted pain relief and pressure support is considered quite expensive for what´s essentially a foam mattress.

Are Casper mattresses good for back pain?

Both The Casper and The Wave mattresses feature a  Hyper-Targeted Support system allowing heavier parts of your body to sink into the mattress while still giving you pressure relief, contour, and support.  The Wave is designed specifically to help relieve pressure points associated with hip and shoulder pain and is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. Our team said it wasn´t the most super firm mattress if that´s what you are looking for.  Online customer reviews are mixed.  Some say their aches and pains are gone thanks to Casper´s scientifically engineered mattresses and are now committed Casper customers, (although admit they can take some getting used to, so don´t expect an overnight instant cure).  Others are unconvinced and warn not to believe the hype.  Although, as Casper is launching more stores across the US, with concessions inside selected Target stores too there´s more opportunity to try before you buy - plus don´t forget their 100 day risk-free trial.

Does the Casper Mattress delivery include removal of the old mattress?

It depends which model you buy, purchase their top-end The Wave mattress and you´ll get white glove delivery with unpacking, setting up of your new mattress and removing your old one included in the price.  Customers buying The Casper or Casper Essential can buy the Home Delivery Service at checkout, which costs $149 (available in 48 contiguous United States) which is the same service. Other than that, getting rid of your old mattress is up to you,
