In just a few years Idle Sleep has managed to upgrade the ordinary, all-foam mattress and offer its customers a range of “mattress-in-a-box” options, which are a step ahead amongst its competitors when it comes to innovation, affordability, and quality. The brand is most recognized for its luxury, flippable and dual-firmness mattresses. This feature allows you to extend the lifespan of your mattress, which most mattress brands do not offer. In our review below, we will take a closer look at three of their four mattresses, The Idle Gel Foam, Idle Gel Plush and the Idle Hybrid mattress.

Who is the Idle Sleep mattress for?

  • Likes the feel of a memory foam mattress– If you prefer a slow-moving memory foam feel without feeling stuck. The gel-infused Buoyancy foam will allow you to move around easier.
  • Couples: Comfort and support layers assist in minimizing motion transfer.
  • Side Sleepers: The Idle Gel Plush is perfect for side sleepers of light to average weight with its thick comfort layer. The Idle Gel Foam mattress is ideal for side sleepers of average weight.
  • You value customer-friendly policies: Idle sleep offers one of the longest sleep trials of 18 months and a lifetime warranty to original owners.
  • Back Sleeper: The Idle Hybrid mattress is a great option for back and stomach sleepers, particularly those larger who require added firmness and support.
  • People of all sizes will find a mattress amongst the three to suit their sleeping needs.
  • Hot Sleepers: Unlike most memory foam mattresses that trap heat, the Idle Gel Foam and Plush mattresses are extremely cooling due to its gel-infused Buoyancy foam, and breathable cotton.

Who won’t love the Idle Sleep mattress?

  • If you do not enjoy an all-foam mattress, then the Idle Gel Foam and Idle Gel Plush mattress would not be the best fit.
  • Large sleepers over 230lbs.
  • If you tend to sleep at the end of your mattress.

Idle Sleep company policy

Idle Sleep was formed in 2017 and originated in Colorado Springs, part of the parent company the Idle Group. Idle Group’s founder and CEO, Craig Schmeizer, is no new-comer to the mattress industry. He was instrumental in co-founding and spearheading Nectar Sleep and DreamCloud Sleep. The Idle Sleep brand gained popularity with its Idle natural Hybrid mattresses. After a year of research and development, they launched two new designs; the Idle Gel Foam and the Idle Gel Plush. Their mattresses are made from CertiPUR-US-certified foams and include Rapid Response technology and Cooling Buoyancy. All of their hybrid mattresses are flippable which means added durability and longevity.

Idle Sleep mattress performance

Idle Sleep mattresses offer the optimum balance between comfort, quality, versatility and support. It is important to consider body weight, sleep position and personal preferences when choosing a mattress. Idle Sleep managed to create affordable yet great quality hand-made mattresses together with their higher-end mattresses. All designed with functionality, innovation and premium materials. The fact that sleepers can choose one mattress with dual firmness is quite a clever interesting concept.

Below we will go in-depth on how their materials and construction are designed to give almost every kind of sleeper the rest they need from their Idle Gel foam, Idle Gel Plush and Idle Hybrid mattresses.

Construction layers and materials used

Idle Gel Foam, Idle Gel Plush & Idle Hybrid

All Idle Sleeps foams are CertiPURUS® certified so you can rest assured they meet the latest US health, safety and environmental regulations, with low emissions and made without harmful chemicals.

Idle Gel Foam

The Idle Gel Foam is 12 inches thick. Its cover is removable and washable and temperature regulating, beneath which is a fire-resistant barrier.

It has a total comfort layer of 5 inches; a 3″ gel-infused Cooling Buoyancy foam and a 2″ perforated supportive foam. The 7″ support layer is made up of high-density foam. Above the final bottom cover, is an additional fire-resistant barrier.

Idle Gel Plush

The Idle Gel Plush is a 14″ thick mattress. The washable cover is made with ICE FABRIC™ and gel-infused.

It has a total comfort layer of 6 inches; an additional layer of 1″ Cooling Buoyancy foam quilted to the cover and sits on top of a fire-resistant barrier, below is a 2″ Cooling Buoyancy foam and a 3″ IDLE memory foam. The 8″ support layer is a high-density foam base. The cover is again preceded by a layer of the fire-resistant barrier.

Idle Hybrid

The Idle Hybrid is a flippable, 14″ mattress and what’s great about this, is that you can choose between having both sides firm, both sides medium or one side firm and the other medium.

The washable, quilted cover is made from temperature-regulating Thermocool™ fabric, followed by a fire-resistant barrier.

It has a comfort layer of 4″; a 1″ Contouring foam that is quilted into the cover, a 2″ Cooling Buoyancy foam and a 1″ supportive transition foam layer.

Its main support core is made up of 6 inches of the Quantum Edge-to-Edge pocketed coil system, which provides support throughout the mattress right to the edge. The pocketed coils allow for targeted body support no matter the position. Once the Idle Hybrid is flipped over, you have the same layers.

Idle Sleep mattress firmness

The Idle Sleep Gel Foam mattress

The Idle Gel Foam is the Idle Sleeps entry-level model. Idle Sleep measures the mattress as a Medium Firm, 5.5 – 7 on the firmness scale. We found the Idle Gel Foam mattress to be a medium feel and a 5-6 on the firmness level scale. You will still enjoy its comfort layers memory foam feel, and soft contouring to your body shape for adequate pressure relief. It is important to note that this will however depend on body weight and preference. If you are heavy you may want the support and feel of a firmer mattress.

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress

We experienced the Idle Gel Plush mattress as Medium with a little more softness. Idle Sleep measures the mattress as a Medium Soft, 4.5-5 on the firmness scale. This Medium Soft feel mattress will suit light to average sleepers; heavy sleepers will experience it to be on the softer side and should consider their hybrid model. Most petite to average weight sleepers would find the Gel Plush mattress to be ideal.

The Idle Sleep Hybrid Mattress

The hybrid mattresses are flippable and offer a choice between two firmness levels, a Medium and Firm. Another option with the hybrid range is dual firmness, one side being Medium and the other side Firm. The Medium version still has a soft foam feel and stands out to be more popular than the Firm. We suggest the Firm option for strict heavier back and stomach sleepers weighing more than 300lbs or if you just prefer a firmer mattress. On the firmness scale according to the Idle sleep website, it rates the Medium version as 5.5-7, whilst the Firm weighs in at 7. The Idle Sleep website also has a firmness scale to help customers identify which mattress would be most suited to their preferred sleeping position.

Back Sleepers

Both the Gel Foam and the medium-firm Hybrid, would both be suitable for average weight sleepers who weigh 130lbs to 230lbs and should feel this mattress somewhat conforming, fairly supportive with not much sinkage. The Gel Plush would suit lightweight back sleepers.

They should feel this soft mattress conforming to quite a noticeable extent around the lower back, yet feel the support of the Buoyancy foam. The Luxury Firm Hybrid, with a firmness of 7-9, that ranges from firm to extra firm, would suit back sleepers over 130lbs and some back sleepers heavier than 230lbs, who prefer a softer feel

Side Sleepers

An all-foam mattress is ideal to prevent the build-up of pressure under the shoulders and hips. The medium-soft Gel Plush would suit lightweight to average side sleepers who weigh 230 lbs. or less. They should feel the mattress conforming noticeably, providing a good balance of contouring and support – reducing pressure while supporting their natural spinal alignment. The medium-firm Gel Foam and Hybrid would suit average weight side sleepers between 130 – 230lbs. Sleepers should feel conformed, fairly supported with little to no sinkage. The Luxury Firm Hybrid mattress would suit side sleepers who weigh more than 230lbs. Heavier side sleepers on this firm – extra firm mattress should feel very little contouring and very supported with no sinking.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers, prefer a thinner top layer than side and back sleepers, to prevent the hips from sinking too low. The comfort layers of the Gel Foam, Gel Plush and Hybrid are all relatively thick at 5 inches, 6 inches and 4 inches respectively.

The all-foam Gel Plush and Gel Foam should provide lightweight and average weight stomach sleepers good support in their torso region while preventing their hips from sinking too low. Idle Sleeps high-density foams are more responsive and supportive than standard memory foams and limit sinkage. Heavier sleepers might notice some sagging, so we recommend the Luxury Firm Hybrid to support targeted areas like the hips, to ensure optimal spine alignment.

Combination Sleepers

If you change positions frequently, the Idle Sleep mattresses make it easier to change positions because its foam provides more bounce without that stuck feeling. When determining the thickness of the comfort layer, combination sleepers should consider their body type and sleeping position that they mostly use. One lightweight combination sleeper noted that for the Gel Plush, she was able to get comfortable in different positions. It offered enough support for her spine and neck while on her back. She also felt good pressure relief for the hips and shoulders when lying on her side; and it was still firm enough to not cause any sinking of her neck while sleeping on her stomach.

Heavy Sleepers

For side sleepers who weigh more than 230lbs, we recommend the Idle Hybrid Luxury- Firm, which ranks as 7 – 9 on the Idle Sleep mattress firmness scale. For back and stomach sleepers we recommend an extra firm bed, preferably a firmness level of 9-10.

Petite Sleepers

We recommend the Gel Plush for a petite (less than 130lbs) back and stomach sleeper, who prefers a slightly firmer feel. Some petite side sleepers who like a firmer feel may opt for the Idle Gel Plush.

Idle Sleep edge support

Idle Gel Foam

The Gel Foam medium-firm mattress has a more supportive edge than most all-foam mattresses. Most light to average sleepers should be able to make full use of the entire surface without the feeling of falling off the bed. However, for larger sleepers, extra reinforcement is needed for better edge support which is missing on the all-foam mattresses.

Idle Gel Plush

Although comfort and pressure relief was quite good for a lightweight sleeper, edge support on the Gel Plush was not so good. There’s some sinkage around the edge of the Gel Plush mattress, which can be expected for most all-foam models. If you are sharing your mattress we recommend purchasing a larger size.

Idle Hybrid

The Idle Hybrid offers excellent edge support for most sleepers due to its Quantum Edge-to-Edge coil support.

Idle Sleep mattress temperature regulation

Unlike regular all-foam mattresses that trap heat, the Gel Foam and Gel Plush mattresses have cooling technologies in their comfort and support layers. The quilted cover is breathable and thermo-regulating. Their Buoyancy Foam as well as a gel infusion helps to increase heat dissipation and to sleep cool. The transition layer of foam is perforated allowing for steady airflow. The Hybrid sleeps cooler, as the coil layer allows for better air circulation and constant airflow through the bed.

Motion isolation and noise

All-foam mattresses are great when it comes to motion transfer and are particularly good at absorbing motion. All three mattresses had fairly good motion isolation and a minimal amount of motion transfer was observed. Idle Sleep Hybrid’s pocketed coils also allow for reduced motion transfer. The absence of coils in all-foam mattresses eliminates those insistent squeak noises. There was little to no significant noise on all three models, especially on the Hybrid due to its pocketed coils.

Is Idle Sleep suitable for couples and sex?

If you have never considered choosing a mattress based on your sex life, maybe give it some thought for your next mattress purchase. Couples prefer a more responsive surface for sex, although the Cooling Buoyancy foam in the Gel Foam and Gel Plush reacts faster than memory foam; it still has a somewhat slow-moving feel. The good news is that the all-foam models are quite silent. However, the Hybrid foam model offers a more enjoyable experience for couples, thanks to it being quite a silent, cooler bed with excellent edge support, yielding ease of movement and bounce.

Durability and longevity

The Idle Sleep mattresses high-density support foam and quality materials add to their durability. The lifetime warranty assures us when it comes to longevity and durability.

The Hybrid has an estimated longevity of about 10 years, keeping in mind that as with all mattresses this does depend on weight, frequency of use and care. The Gel Foam and Gel Plush should last for at least 6 to 7 years.

Bed base

If you want your mattress to last longer, make sure you choose the right type of base. Idle Sleep offers a selection of bases, which also come with a warranty. You may use any type of box spring, base or frame for your Idle All Foam mattress. A box spring, however, is not recommended with the Hybrid and if used with a slatted base, the slats should not be more than 4 inches apart.

Other mattresses by Idle Sleep

The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex is also a 14″ flippable, dual-sided mattress, but it gives you the option to choose! Not only can you choose your preferred firmness level of each side but you can also choose between Dunlop latex and Talalay latex. Dunlop latex is the denser, firmer option while Talalay latex is more breathable and softer. It consists of an organic cotton cover, 100% natural wool, Dunlop or Talalay latex foam on either side of the 8″ pocketed coil support layer. It is ideal for those seeking an eco-friendlier option as it is hypoallergenic, dust-mite resistant, and anti-microbial, and GOLS organic certified, however it is on the pricier end.
