Saatva mattress performance review

Saatva provides three levels of firmness – Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Each respective tier offers a unique variance of heating, motion transfer or frame support. With this in mind, you’ll still want to select the best mattress to suit your sleep requirements. When you purchase a firmer bed, you still want it to be able to contour to the shape of your body. And the Saatva Firm mattress does just that. Their Firm comfort option is perfect for back and stomach sleepers but not recommended for side or combination sleepers that tend to rotate between sleep positions.

The Saatva Luxury Firm is a medium firm mattress and is great for back, stomach and combination sleepers but not a good fit for side sleepers. Then you have the Plush soft which is the softer model. This mattress is a medium and recommended for side sleepers and is really comfortable with a huge pillow top. All mattress models come in an 11.5 inch or 14.5 inch height.

Construction layers and materials used

Saatva has a signature design that remains the same across its firmness range. The increasing firmness is determined by the mattress coils and the softness of the foam used above the wrapped coils.  The rest of the textiles and structure remains consistent as Saatva’s way of backing its design.

Saatva firmness and feel options

As mentioned above, the Saatva mattresses differ only in their respective firmness tiers. These range from a Plush Soft model to their Firm model (18lbs of pressure to 30lbs of pressure in the foam density). Their most popular seller is by far the Luxury Firm model, which is their mid range model. Depending on your sleep habits, weight and build, you’ll want to choose the best model to suit your needs. We recommend the Firm model for heavier bodies, while the Plush Soft for lighter bodies needing that extra cushioning that comes with this mode.

Saatva edge support

Every model of the mattress series comes with a foam casing designed to add extra structural integrity to the bed. The casing is both firm as well as light, to provide adequate temperature regulation for each mattress. Some may find the edging a bit rigid, but must consider its durability. The casing adds a great finish to the mattress design. The edge support is further enforced with a Spruce foundation, which is a really durable high quality wood at this price.

Saatva Firm vs Luxury Firm vs Plush Soft

These are the primary materials used by Saatva in an attempt to deliver consistent support across a wide spread of sleeping requirements. Everyone has their own respective sleeping requirements. Let’s take a look at a few of the factors that Saatva have used to base their designs on.

Sleep position, body types and pressure relief

Below is a relative chart you can use as a basic guideline to help you navigate your sleeping requirements. These are not definitive and you should definitely try the product out personally if you can before purchase to help you decide which is best for you.

People sleep in a variety of positions, and some shift these during their sleep cycles. Back and stomach sleepers generally will require something that can withhold its firmness throughout the night. Side sleepers will need something that has more give, or elasticity. People who move a lot in their sleep may need something in between these two in order to shift comfortably without waking up to their own movements.

Temperature regulation

The Saatva Classic mattresses have 2 layers of coils and none of the 3 comfort levels are very soft. So for that reason all 3 mattresses sleep medium cool. The cotton cover also allows space for great airflow to keep you cool. Its a nice middle ground for sleepers who don’t have specific temperature needs.

Motion isolation and noise

The Saatva Classic is a great option that is ideal for anyone looking for minimal motion transfer overnight. It’s individual coils provide even weight support for couples who have a restless sleeper/s during the night. The Innerspring foundation breathes well and is surprisingly quiet  during position shifts. They still maintain a healthy natural bounce across each firmness tier. Those who select the Firm tier will experience nearly zero sense of motion if they are below 120lbs in weight.

Is Saatva suitable for couples and sex?

Couples will get the most out of their mattress by investing in something like the Luxury Firm option. It’s elasticity and extra bounce will make it easier to maneuver and experiment without too much discomfort. Heavier couples may want to invest in something like the Saatva HD, their luxury hybrid innerspring mattress specifically designed to support heavier people . The extra support will allow for these lovers to uphold consistent performance without compromising the quality of their sleep due to wear and tear.

Durability and longevity

All varieties of the Saatva series maintain their sense of durability over the initial 15 year warranty. They strongly advise using their models in conjunction with their bed bases in order to get the most of the bed’s lifespan. There have been reported cases of occasional sagging over time in the center of the bed. These were mostly from heavier people who sleep alone in the center of the bed every night. Also its important to try and use the more breathable latex or innerspring components in high humidity environments so as to minimize moisture related wear and tear.

Bed base

Inside Saatva’s handy buyer’s guide they detail which mattress goes best with which base. They advise using box springs or even slats for their series. A solid platform as a base looks great but it may not necessarily provide the even weight dispersion you need because of it’s fixed position.

Saatva’s adjustable Lineal base will really appeal to those looking for a luxurious touch to their sleeping experience. It comes with a remote control to adjust the head, middle or bottom end of the bed without lifting a hand. The base also has massage settings, lighting underneath the base and does not lose its structure or shape after repetitive shifting over time.

Summary of the Saatva mattress range

The Plush Soft

The Plush Soft option is great for those who need a softer bed for their sleep, such as side sleepers. Side sleepers do not evenly spread their weight over a mattress, so they need softer surfaces to support the various pressure points on the bed. The Plush Soft firmness along with the innerspring base have a great tensile integrity to pressure sleepers, who may find that something firmer like Innerspring mattresses may be too harsh on their frame. This may not be the best option for couples with restless partners due to its extra bounce.

The Luxury Firm

This is their best seller and the more traditional of the mattress options because it fits most sleepers. Tried and tested over time, the memory foam options tend to give couples and heavier people a better sense of support than the innerspring. People who sleep on their back or stomach will also enjoy the way that the Saatva Spinal Zone Technology helps to support their weight evenly. The Saatva Classic range does not have any cooling technology but as we mentioned earlier all the mattresses sleep medium cool. If you sleep hot or live in hot temperatures, then we recommend Saatva’s other brand Loom & Leaf with a gel cooling layer.

The Firm

There are some really nice factors that come with the Firm mattress option. It carries most of the elasticity of its memory foam counterpart, with an added level of firmness in the coils and pillow top foam. This is great for combination sleepers who may need the extra bit of flexibility to shift with their sleeping positions throughout the night. It’s also a solid foundation for those who stay on their back or stomach for their entire sleep cycle. It’s great to note that regardless of the firmness tier you choose, the amount of materials used will leave an even carbon footprint, due to their eco friendly manufacturing standards.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Saatva mattress brand?

FAQ

How long will a Saatva Mattress last?

Saatva has a healthy 15 year warranty on their products. The mattress series does uphold its quality over this period, give or take a manufacturing error or two. There will also be quicker wear for heavier couples.

Do Saatva mattresses sag?

The mattress series generally doesn’t sag over time, although using the memory foam option in humid conditions will naturally lead to the mattress losing its firmness over time, due to excess moisture retention.

Is there a weight limit for the Saatva Mattress?

Even with it’s sturdy design and high grade materials, the Saatva mattress will, like other mattresses, have its limitations. It's best recommended to not exceed a total weight of 550lbs between you and your partner.

Can you flip the Saatva mattress?

Because of its specific foam topped design, the mattress will not function properly flipped over.

Is the Saatva mattress worth it?

Considering that the mattress is geared towards getting luxury at an affordable rate, Saatva competes strongly against other high end brands. It certainly provides adequate, if not admirable value for money.

Is the Saatva mattress good for back pain?

The Saatva is great for those seeking any form of orthopaedic support. It combines luxury appeal with some clinical details specifically focused to those who may experience hip, side or back pain.

Does the Saatva mattress delivery include removal of the old mattress?

Saatva includes free removal of your old mattress upon delivery, free of charge!
