TempurPedic mattress performance review

There are 4 model options to choose from in the TempurPedic range. Each model comes in between 1-4 firmness options depending on which one you purchase. Overall these mattresses carry a traditional neutral foam feel, although the Tempur Adapt and ProAdapt both have Hybrid options which have a slightly more springy latex feel. The ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt each have slight variants in their layering composition to accommodate some more specific pressure related sleeping requirements. The Tempur Breeze range is specifically geared towards remedying sleepers who tend to sleep to warm.

Below is a layout of each mattress models’ purchasing options for you to choose from.

  • Tempur Adapt:  This is the entry-level TempurPedic option. It has a standard memory foam feel, but also comes in a Hybrid option. It’s also the thinnest mattress at 11’’ in height.
  • Tempur ProAdapt:  TempurPedic claims this to be their most popular model. It has a 12’’ height profile and comes in 3 firmness levels (soft, medium and firm. It also comes in hybrid and cooling options, making it the most diverse customer package of the series.
  • Tempur LuxeAdapt:  Available in only soft and firm options, this mattress has extra support layers to give the contours of the body added response and support.
  • Tempur Breeze:  This model has an extra layer of cooling gel memory foam in addition to the laminated cooling cover. It’s geared towards accommodating sleepers that overheat. Tempur-Pedic claims that it sleeps up to 8 degrees cooler than the rest of its range.

Construction layers and materials used

The TempurPedic mattress range comes in 4 primary models. These models all carry similarities in their basic design, and will have extra elements or layers depending on your preferred firmness level or additional sleeping requirements. While the basic layering and composition of the TempurPedic models remain quite similar throughout the range, it’s important to understand where and why the slight variants exist in each model’s design.

Every mattress comes with a unique laminated cooling cover as an optional extra. These are all removable with the exception of the Tempur Adapt. The Tempur Breeze also has cooling gel in its memory foam mattresses to complement its other cooling properties. The base layers of the Adapt and Pro Adapt are both solid high-density foam whereas the other models have convolutions in their support layers. The latter’s base layer looks similar to an egg carton in its design and this allows for extra airflow throughout the rest of the mattress. Below is a basic layout of each model’s layering elements.

Tempur-Pedic firmness and pressure relief

You will experience different levels of firmness and feel depending on which firmness level and mattress type you choose within the Tempur-Pedic mattress range. We found that the soft tier of each mattress model had a slow response time to pressure. The average body weight (between 150-220 lbs) will sink into this mattress but not to an uncomfortable degree. The medium firmness has the more traditional neutral feel that most sleepers should be accustomed to. Some may not enjoy the slightly dull response given off by memory foam, which is why we really like the option of the medium hybrid. It has the same support levels as its memory foam counterpart, but with a quicker response time to shifting body pressure. The maximum firmness mattresses still give the body the pressure relieving that most sleepers require, but it should be more comfortable to heavier body types.

Below is a relative chart of each model’s firmness level, based on a 180lbs sleeper testing each model. These are not definitive and it’s best to test the mattresses out yourself to decide how firm they feel to you.

Sleep position and body type

In order to give yourself the best possible slumber, it’s really valuable to know your sleeping habits and requirements. These will help you understand how a specific mattress type or design will affect your sleep cycle, and help you decide which model or make is best for you.

We think back or stomach sleepers will enjoy the way that the medium and firm options of these mattresses comfortably support their frames. These sleepers need solid support around their hips and along their spine so that they can maintain their position comfortable for as long as possible. The highest firmness levels (only available with the ProAdapt, LuxeAdapt and Breeze models) We found that the Medium Hybrid models in the Adapt and Pro Adapt to have a healthy response to shifting positions. This is great for combination sleepers who need to shift positions without having their slumber disturbed. We feel that the Adapt and Pro Adapt provide adequate relief on pressure points around the hips, knees, sides and shoulders for side sleepers (especially with their medium hybrid options) but for those who need extra support in these areas, there is the LuxeAdapt option. We feel that it’s a bit pricey for the extra contour support that it possesses, but if you have the extra dollars to spend you won’t regret doing so.

Tempur-Pedic edge support

The TempurPedic mattresses all have the same design when it comes to edge support. There is no extra reinforcement or structures in place to add extra support around these areas. We found that the edge of each model does have a notable sink when sitting or placing pressure in these areas. Because the foam used in the TempurPedic range is of a higher density than your average foam mattress, this sag is not too extreme at first use. That being said this may worsen over time due to a lack of structural reinforcement. Couples who use most of the surface area of a mattress should opt for as big a size as possible when purchasing your TempurPedic so as to delay or avoid any excess wear and tear in this area.

TempurPedic temperature regulation

TempurPedic mattresses all have great overall temperature regulation, considering that they are memory foam designs. Memory foam layers can tend to insulate heat levels in their layering, but the TempurPedic range breathes well within its structure. The Tempur Breeze model has a cooling gel in it’s comfort layers under the body and convolutions in its base layer to aid air flow. TempurPedic claims that this model sleeps up to 8 degrees cooler than it’s other mattress and while we can’t confirm or dispute this, we can definitely feel a significant drop in temperature in this mattress.

Below is a table showing each model’s general temperature feel. Each mattress will have an increase in temperature as it’s thickness increases.

Motion isolation and noise

We tried out the Tempur Adapt for motion isolation and found the experience to be very pleasant. Because there are no springs or coils in this mattress there is virtually zero noise when shifting positions or moving across the surface. Memory foam is generally the quieter mattress type and this does not disappoint. The memory foam bed also handles motion transfer really well with little to no disturbance along the surface area during movement. Couples will enjoy the discretion and motion support that this mattress provides in these areas.

Is TempurPedic suitable for couples and sex?

Because the TempurPedic mattresses are all memory foam designs, their general overall response characteristics may not be the best for sex. Memory foam tends to give off very little response, even with combined couples movement, which can make it trickier to gain sufficient traction or support while switching positions. There is also a noticeable sag along the edge of the mattress, so couples won’t get to get the most out the entire surface area for sex. The Hybrid foam model will give off some extra reinforcement due to its slightly heightened response time.

Durability and longevity

The first thing most people notice about this mattress is probably its price. While it may seem a bit expensive at first look, we do feel that the TempurPedic mattress can justify its heavier price tag. If well looked after, and not in extreme conditions, the mattress should reach somewhere close to the 10-year warranty that it comes with. TempurPedic have spent extra money on the materials used in this range, particularly in the quality of its high-density foam and cooling covers (cool to touch). We should remind potential buyers that couples will want to buy as big a mattress as possible in order to get the most out of the TempurPedic’s potential lifespan.

Bed base

TempurPedic offers a quaint, but aesthetically pleasing selection of options to choose from in their bed base range. These come in either solid platforms or adjustable base options, or Power Bases. The Power bases come in 3 tiers – Ease, Ergo and Ergo- Extend. The range of motion extends as well as their level of adjustability with each tier. The solid platform options come in an attractive charcoal color, and in 2,5 and 9’’ versions. They suit the frame and density of the mattress quite well and also add a bit of much needed edge support along the mattress’ perimeter.

The Tempur-Pedic Hybrid mattresses

The Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze combines the cooling properties of the Breeze model with the body contour support of the Luxe model. It comes in soft and firm levels and is one of the priciest models in the range. We think that this model may be a bit excessive for somebody looking for simple, affordable comfort. However if luxury is what you are looking for, or you simply require this kind of specific support then you should enjoy the benefits of this mattress.

TempurPedic mattress complaints

  • With the exception of the Tempur Breeze, these mattresses can tend to hold too much in their heat due to the memory foam layering. If you sleep in warmer climates, it’s probably best to buy the Tempur Breeze – if you can afford it.
  • Some users have complained about some off gassing smells and the mattress’ tendency to hold odors over time.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the TempurPedic mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4.2/5

4.2/5
  • TempurPedic’s mattress variety is outright impressive. It’s always appealing when a company makes this much effort to provide for different sleeping requirements and body types.
  • The overall memory foam firmness levels and feel across this mattress range is highly competitive with most other top tier products in its price range.
  • If you’re looking for something that is affordable and accessible,Tempur-Pedic mattress brand may not be the first choice on your list. However if you have the capacity to buy this mattress, we think it’s definitely worth giving a try.
