GhostBed mattresses are made by Nature's Sleep, who have 18 years sleep industry experience. Founder and CEO Marc Werner is from the family behind the Werner Ladder company, so innovation runs through their DNA. After undergoing 3 neck surgeries, Marc couldn't find a mattress/pillow combo to give him a pain free sleep and so decided to invent them himself. Don't let the brand name spook you, Ghostbed is linked to Marc´s childhood when he thought ghosts were hiding out under his bed. Ghostbed started in 2010 and a few years later launched their flagship mattress GhostBed into the market, which was followed by GhostBed Luxe, GhostBed Flex and their newest GhostBed 3D Matrix hybrid, along with a selection of bed bases and sleep products.

Shipping:  Shipping and handling is FREE throughout all 48 continental states, but there’s a $600 freight charge for goods sent to Alaska & Hawaii.  Goods are automatically shipped within 24 hours of receiving completed orders and are sent using FedEx, normally arriving within 3-5 working days. Customers receive a FedEx tracking number via email once your order is shipped. If you want to postpone this automated delivery process, then you’ll need to sign up for FedEx Delivery Manager®. All GhostBed mattresses are vacuum packed and compressed safely in a 4ft tall box.

Old mattress removal:  The company doesn’t automatically dispose of your old mattress. You can buy their ‘white glove delivery service’ at checkout which includes installing and setting up your new mattress and/or base and removing and disposing of your old one. This white glove delivery service costs $199 for up to 2 items and $299 for 3 or more. If you’d prefer to do this yourself, your new mattress will be delivered outside your front door, so make sure you’re at home to receive it. It’s up to you to bring your mattress inside, unbox and set it up and then dispose of your old mattress responsibly. Don’t worry, GhostBed products come with easy to follow instructions and the website has a handy guide with suggestions about how to dispose of your old mattress. https://www.ghostbed.com/mattress-disposal-and-donation-guide/#

Payment accepted:  There are flexible finance and lease options available to customers. With Affirm Financing you purchase your goods online, can apply for finance during checkout and then once your application is approved – you can select to pay off your goods in 3, 6 or 12 monthly installments (interest fees vary between 0% and 30% APR simple interest). You can also pay by bitcoin through BitPay and with Amazon Payment, Paypal, Apple Pay, Google/Chrome Play. Katapult (formerly Zibby) is a lease to own payment plan letting GhostBed’s customers pay monthly lease payments using a credit or debit card.

Returns and refund:  Return requests can be processed after you’ve had the mattress for 30 days. If you remain unhappy with your GhostBed mattress and need it returned, after Day 30 and before Day 101 contact customer services who will coordinate a return collection and issue you with a full refund, hassle free. Take note that Day 1 of your sleep trial counts as the day your order is shipped. The retailer allows 1 mattress return per household. Don’t worry about storing your original mattress box, as returns are gifted to nearby charities. Customers can return unopened, unused mattresses, but these incur a 15% restocking fee.  Amazon purchases are subject to Amazon’s 30-day returns policy and should be made with Amazon directly. An important note, be aware that if you buy a GhostBed mattress using a GROUPON coupon or another similar online voucher program, this invalidates the 101-Night sleep trial period and your mattress will not be eligible for return.

Sleep trial period:  GhostBed mattresses come with a 101-day ‘risk free’ sleep trial, letting customers in the contiguous United States trial their mattress at home for 3 months, risk free. It can take up to 30 sleeps for your body to fully adjust to a new mattress, that’s why the company suggests trialing it for at least 30 nights. If, after this time you are still unhappy, contact customer services to organize a returns collection and you will be issued with a 100% refund. Be sure to alert them before your trial period is up!

Warranties:  The GhostBed original mattress comes with a 20-year limited warranty; the GhostBed Luxe, GhostBed Flex and their 3D Matrix mattress has a 25-year warranty. Customers must show proof of purchase from either the GhostBed website or from an authorized retailer. Be aware that during the first 10 years of your warranty GhostBed will replace or repair the mattress if there are defects in craftsmanship and will meet these costs (except shipping and handling fees). Then, once 11 years have expired, the customer pays 55% of the mattress cost to replace it, and this number increases by 5% every year.

Packaging and unpacking:  GhostBed mattresses are vacuum-packed and delivered by FedEx in a 4ft tall box. Be careful lifting the box as it can weigh anything from 60lbs up to 160lbs, depending on which style you buy. You can sleep on the mattress the same day it’s opened, just remember to unbox your mattress in the room you plan to use it. As you remove the packaging, the mattress will start to decompress back to its normal size and shape. If it has a lot of memory foam, it can take up to 72 hours to fully regain shape.

Smell (off gassing), harmful chemicals:   Bed-in-a-box foam mattresses can let off a chemical odor when they are first opened, this is called “off-gassing”. If this happens, don’t worry as this will soon disappear and is to do with the packaging/sealing process. Just make sure you keep the room well ventilated and if you are sensitive to headaches or nausea wait until the mattress is fully aired before sleeping on it.

Where are the mattresses made?  GhostBed mattresses are designed and made in the USA by Nature’s Sleep.

GhostBed mattress performance review

Nature’s Sleep has over 18 years sleep industry expertise. After launching GhostBed mattresses in 2015, the brand won awards and recognition for their innovative durable foam materials and their trademarked sleep tech. Although GhostBed has sold more than a million sleep products online, their return rate is low.

GhostBed’s all-foam mattresses are built upon a high-density supportive foam core, which along with its plush surface cover helps to relieve sleepers pressure points. Focusing on cooling and comfort led the company to devise and trademark innovative technologies, like their Phase Change temperature regulating material and their Gel Polymer layer which reacts to a sleepers body shape and temperature. It’s no wonder GhostBed is a popular brand for customers wanting a temperature neutral or cooling, comfortable mattress.

Construction layers and materials used

No harmful chemicals are used during the making of GhostBed mattresses, all materials are CertiPur-US approved. They are eco friendly, made without ozone-depleting chemicals and are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). The mattresses zipped outer cover is easily removable for spot cleaning – not machine washable.

GhostBed

This 11″ triple layered all-foam mattress launched GhostBed mattresses when they had designs on making a mattress to suit all sleepers. The top layer of 1.½” aerated latex cools you down, circulating air and giving you bounce,  letting you move around easily.

The 2-inch middle layer is made from memory foam (4-pound density) infused with a cooling gel to relieve pressure on your hips, thighs, back and shoulders while drawing body heat away from the top layer. The 7½” core foundation layer is made from high-density polyfoam for ultimate support, making this an ideal mattress for heavier customers. The removable mattress cover is made from a high quality viscose and polyester blend which has a soft, plush feel. The mattress comes with a 20-year warranty.

Ghostbed Luxe

Released in 2017, this 13″ all-foam mattress is made from 7 unique layers and combines 2-stage Cooling Technology. Sold as the Coolest Bed in the World™, each layer of this luxury mattress is engineered to cool, contour and comfort. From its quilted zip cover, fusing ‘cool to the touch’ Ghost Ice Fabric with coolburst airflow technology and pressure relieving memory foam. While its Ghost Ice Layer, made from phase changing fabric absorbs and retains excess body heat.

The 2″ gel memory foam layer helps to align your spine, relieve aches and pains while the Ghost Bounce transition layer underneath has a quick latex-like response with the contouring capacity of memory foam. All these layers are supported by a 7.5” dense base of solid, durable polyurethane foam.  The mattress has a 25-year warranty, twice that of its competitors.

Ghostbed Flex

This cooling hybrid combines pressure relieving memory foam with 8.5” pocketed base coils. Hot sleepers who want the comfort of gel memory foam and the support/bounce of springs should seriously consider this plush mattress. Its quilted cover has a triple blend of gel memory foam, cooling fibers and cool surface fabric. The 1” gel memory foam layer underneath helps align your spine and alleviate aches and pains, while its GhostBounce Layer gives sleepers a latex-like response along with the contour of memory foam.

Individual pocketed coils in The GhostFlex Coil Unit circulate air around its base layer, limiting motion transfer and giving you that all important support. This coil unit has reinforced perimeter coils for enhanced edge support. The bottom layer is a 1” high-density polyfoam and overall, this 13″ mattress has a responsive, neutral foam feel and comes with a 25-year warranty.

Ghostbed 3D Matrix

This 12” hybrid mattress has a lot going on under the covers; from its 3D Matrix thermo-regulating polymer gel, memory foam, bounce foam and wrapped pocketed coils. This ‘3D Matrix tech’ uses a Polymer gel layer which bio-adjusts to a sleeper’s temperature and body shape, simultaneously cooling, contouring, reducing pressure and the sleeper’s need to reposition to cool themselves down, helping them reach the REM sleep stage quicker.

Underneath, pressure relief and bounce are boosted by a mixed combo of memory foam, the Ghost Bounce layer and then a soft layer of transition foam. The 6″pocketed support coils in the lower base give support, bounce and their trademarked Spirited Edge™ Support has 2 rows of reinforced perimeter coils, to maximize edge support. This is an innovative, temperature regulating hybrid mattress with an impressive 25-year warranty.

GhostBed firmness and pressure relief

In this GhostBed mattress review, our feedback relies on our reviewer’s height to weight ratio. All foam mattresses soften over time, so what starts out as a Medium Firm mattress will loosen and become Soft-Medium years later. Also, lightweight sleepers often give the same foam mattress a firmer ranking than their heavier sleep partners who naturally sink lower down to experience the pressure-relieving memory foam and denser core foundation layers.

GhostBed

This triple-layered 11″ GhostBed mattress targets consumers wanting an economical, supportive mattress with a mixed foam feel. Our team ranks it as a Medium Firm. Its gel infused memory foam and dense foundation layers combine to relieve pressure, supporting your heavier trunk and spine. The top layer of breathable latex lets you move around easily and keep cool.

GhostBed Luxe

Men’s Health 2018 Sleep Awards impressively ranked this mattress the “Best Cooling Mattress” and “Best Mattress” and Nature’s Sleep trademark it as the Coolest Bed in the World™. This 7 layered, 13″ mixed foam mattress comes equipped with core & surface cooling technology. Our team rate it as a Medium for firmness with a plush feel. Hot sleepers will like the comfort, pressure relief and coolness of its gel infused memory foam mattress and Ghost Ice Layer, along with the ‘cool to the touch’ sensation of the cooling fabric blended into its quilted outer cover,

GhostBed Flex

This cooling hybrid 13″ mattress is a combination of high grade memory foam along with 8½” individual pocketed coils, giving sleepers pressure relief, comfort, support and bounce. The pocketed coils in the mattresses base layer circulate air flow, contour around your body and limit motion transfer. This mattress has 4 inches of comfort material, so provides great pressure relief for your side, spine and stomach. Sleepers get that responsive neutral foam feel, along with the support and bounce of the coils. Our team ranked it as a Medium on the firmness scale.

GhostBed 3D Matrix

This 12” hybrid features 2 different layers of gel infused memory foam, 6” pocketed coils and a patented Gel Polymer layer which scientifically adjusts to your body shape and temperature. Ranking for firmness, our team gave this mattress a Medium, with the feel of a soft, neutral foam bed. The gel memory foam and poly foam layers provide comfort and pressure relief, while the pocketed coils support and add bounce, keeping you cool as you move around easily on top.

Sleep position and body type

The high-quality foams Nature’s Sleep use for GhostBed mattresses are denser, durable and so can support heavier body frames. Their all-foam mattresses suit sleepers weighing up to 200lbs or more. Their GhostBed Flex and GhostBed 3D Matrix hybrid editions use supportive coils within the lower layers which increases the weight capacity, making them suitable for sleepers weighing up to 350lbs and who want the contour of memory foam with the added support of innersprings.

GhostBed

Ideal for back, combination and side sleepers. If you are a back sleeper, the pressure relief and weight distribution of this latex, memory and polyfoam combo cools, contours and supports spinal alignment. It’s also a great choice for combination sleepers. The makers of this GhostBed mattress market it at all sleeper types. However, feedback from our team was that strict stomach or side sleepers may consider it too firm and will prefer the plush feel of the GhostBed Luxe mattress.

GhostBed Luxe

This luxury all-foam mattress has a medium feel with cushioning properties to relieve pressure build up around sleepers hips and shoulders making it ideal for side sleepers. Our team ranked the GhostBed Luxe as their most accommodating model. The plush feel of this super thick mattress will make it popular with stomach, back and combination sleepers too.

GhostBed Flex

This high-end cooling hybrid mattress uses a mix of quality foams and pocketed base coils to comfort, support and alleviate pressure, cradling your heavier hips and shoulders, distributing your body weight and aligning your spine. Overall, this mattress is ideal for side, back and stomach sleepers. Also, the bounce and support from its base coils will help combination sleepers to easily move around switching sleep positions.

GhostBed 3D Matrix

This modern hybrid uses specially engineered cooling tech, high quality foams and reinforced coils to create a comfortable, responsive, thermo-regulating mattress that delivers on alignment, pressure relief and overall support. The base coils increase the bounce level and have reinforced edge support. This mattress is great for back and combination sleepers. Our testers think strict side sleepers may find this mattress too firm, whereas strict stomach sleepers may need an overall firmer mattress.

GhostBed Edge Support

All GhostBed mattresses offer a good overall level of edge support, but now their hybrid editions (the GhostBed Flex and GhostBed 3D Matrix) take this one stage further. The pocketed coils in their lower layer use their trademarked Spirited Edge™ Support which has 2 rows of reinforced coils around the mattresses perimeter edge, to give sleepers improved edge support.

GhostBed temperature regulation

Over the last 18 years, the scientific teams behind GhostBed mattresses have prioritized cooling and comfort, inventing and patenting cooling fabrics and temperature regulating tech now used across the range. The GhostBed Luxe, sold as ‘the coolest bed in the world’ has surface and core cooling features; like cooling fibers inside its quilted cover, aerated latex, gel infused memory foam and a thermo-sensitive Ghost Ice Layer which all work together to dissipate body heat, increase airflow and cool you down.

The GhostBed Flex hybrid uses surface and core cooling technologies too, but has the added benefit of pocketed coils in its base layer which circulate a greater level of airflow. GhostBed’s newest 3D Matrix mattress is also a hybrid and advances this technology further, its 3D Matrix Polymer Layer uses a 3D gel that responds to your body temperature, cooling and contouring, reducing your need to move around to cool down. If you’re a warm or hot sleeper we would definitely recommend checking out the science behind GhostBed mattresses.

Motion isolation and noise

Testing out the GhostBed and GhostBed Luxe, these silent mattresses got a big thumbs up from our team for isolating motion and minimizing sleep disturbances. Plus, the bounce from GhostBed’s top latex layer lets you move around easily without getting that stuck feeling, exactly what you’d want from a quality mixed-foam mattress. Because their hybrids – the GhostBed Flex and GhostBed 3D Matrix use supportive coils inside their base layers, the individually pocketed innersprings quickly and quietly isolate movement, increase bounce and core support, helping sleepers switch positions easily without disturbing their partner.

Are GhostBed mattresses suitable for couples and sex?

Some mixed foam mattresses leave couples struggling to get the level of responsiveness they need for enjoyable sleep or for sex. However, GhostBed’s denser foam mattresses score highly with couples because of their balanced foam feel. The combination of synthetic latex, gel memory foam and the dense polyfoam support core in GhostBed’s original mattress gives instant bounce back and conforms to all positions, letting you easily switch positions.

Also, innovative surface and cooling tech used in their GhostBed Luxe, GhostBed Flex and GhostBed 3D Matrix means that even if you get really hot on top of the bed, its layers will dissipate this heat and cool you down. Another advantage for couples is the Spirited Edge Support built into base layers of their hybrids which give you and your partner improved edge support, meaning that however active you get on top of the bed, you are less likely to fall out of it.

Durability and longevity

An average all-foam mattress has a life expectancy of between 7 to 10 years and many of GhostBed’s competitors offer consumers a 10-year warranty. GhostBed doubles that and say confidence in their 20-25 year warranty is backed up by the unique construction of their mattresses using higher-grade foams along with a supportive base of high-density polyfoam or pocketed coils. Because GhostBed mattresses only hit the market in 2015, it’s difficult to put this fully to the test.

Online customer feedback is mixed, many customers shared stories of their amazing improved sleep quality and were happy they had trusted Nature’s Sleep to deliver. Whereas others complained about issues of sagging after just a few years and cited difficulties with executing the terms of their warranty.

Bed base

GhostBed recommends and sells: the Box Spring, the Slatted Frame and their Adjustable Base Frame. Team your GhostBed mattress with a strong foundation and its makers claim it can support up to 750lbs. Our testers believe heavier people should buy a King Size mattress, foundation and maybe a hybrid mattress for the added security of its supportive coils.  Take note, what GhostBed call their Box Spring foundation on the website is actually a solid platform frame, involving a wooden frame and wooden slats screwed in at 2” intervals, with a matching cover to complete the look.

Older style Box Springs with springs aren’t suitable for foam or hybrid mattresses, GhostBed also recommends a slatted frame base to support their mattresses. Their modern Adjustable Base Frame has remote control tech letting sleepers elevate and recline the bed, great for people with health or pain issues.  It even has a massage setting, LED under bed lighting and USB inputs for charging your devices.

GhostBed mattress complaints

  • Some online customers’ complaints were linked to issues with customer policy. Like, if you use an online discount voucher to lower the cost of your mattress then this immediately invalidates your 101 Day Sleep Trial, so you cannot return the mattress.  But this isn’t referenced on the company website.

  • Customers also complained that the 20-year warranty quoted online is misleading as GhostBed will cover the cost to replace or repair the mattress if there are defects in craftsmanship during the first 10 years. But from 11 years onwards the customer pays 55% of the mattress cost to replace it, and this number increases by 5% each year.

Summary of the GhostBed mattress range

GhostBed mattresses have the advantage of Nature’s Sleep’s 18-year industry experience within the sleep sector, and their website proudly states they have over 500,000 happy customers, together with industry awards too. The brand blends specially engineered and patented fabrics with technologies designed to cool, comfort and give sleepers that all important support. GhostBed’s original mattress is still a popular affordable choice for price-conscious consumers, even if it is a little on the firmer side. Whereas, the GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam luxury mattress aimed at people who sleep hot and people with aches and pains who have a little more cash to splash.

The Flex is a great hybrid option, giving you a cool sleep along with the core support of pocketed coils. Their new GhostBed 3D Matrix applies innovative cooling science devised by their sleep engineers GhostBed’s pricing is at the mid to higher range when pitched against other bed-in-a-box online retailers, although the company openly states they make premium, durable mattresses…which are unlikely to be the cheapest.

FAQ

How long does a GhostBed mattress last?

Nature's Sleep has notched up an 18-year history in the sleep sector and proudly promotes the fact that all GhostBed mattresses are made from premium foam materials. The manufacturer says GhostBed mattresses are heavier, denser and more sturdy, which also makes them longer lasting. Most average foam mattresses last between 7-10 years and that's why the majority of bed-in-a-box retailers offer a 10-year warranty. GhostBed offers a 20-25 year limited warranty on their mattresses.  However, because the mattress range only launched in 2015, it is much too soon for us to give you a proven answer. Time will tell.

Do you need a box spring with GhostBed?

You need a rigid solid foundation base for GhostBed mattresses. Many newer box springs are like this, but older style box springs with springs inside shouldn't be used for all-foam mattresses or hybrids. The Boxspring Foundation sold on GhostBed's website is actually a wooden platform foundation - so don't let the product name fool you! The makers also recommend using a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base frame, like their new recliner which has lots of adaptable features.

Can you flip the GhostBed mattress?

No, they should never be flipped. As with other mixed foam mattresses, the layers are positioned in a specific order for their cooling or pressure relieving capacity. It's also why the mattress must always be placed right side up, as the memory foam and latex comfort layers are on the top side. If you want to prolong the life of your mattress, our team suggests rotating it at 180 degrees or sleeping head-to-toe every 3-6 months.

Is GhostBed mattresses good for side sleepers?

This is a tricky one. GhostBed's original mattress was launched and targeted at the mass market and at all sleeper types. But our sleep testers disagreed, ruling out GhostBed's original mattress for strict side sleepers, saying it was too firm and that they experienced some pressure around their shoulders and hips. Testing all mattresses in the range, we felt GhostBed Luxe was a good choice for side sleepers who want an all-foam plush, comforting mattress. The Ghostbed Flex is best for side sleepers wanting the cradle and contour of memory foam, together with the support of coils.

Where can you buy the GhostBed mattresses?

GhostBed is an online bed-in-a-box retailer, go to their website https://www.ghostbed.com/ or you can buy them through Amazon (just remember Amazon purchases are subject to their 30 day returns policy).
