Bear Mattress Review

Bear mattresses are directly targeted at athletes or active people looking for a mattress which aids in rest and recovery. This is largely attributed to the Celliant cover on each of the three mattresses. Celliant is FDA-approved and has undergone clinical trials to boost circulation and aid in recuperation after exercise. With three varieties to choose from and remarkable comfort offered by all three, anyone on the market for a foam mattress would be foolish not to consider Bear.

Who are the Bear mattresses for?

  • Sleepers in all sleeping positions will find all three mattresses in the range very comfortable.
  • Shoppers looking for value – All three mattresses in the range provide great value for money and you will often find Bear discount their mattresses on their site, making them an affordable choice.
  • Athletes or active individuals – and anyone shopping with health and wellness in mind. The Celliant cover on the three Bear mattress types has a whole host of benefits – all driven to give you a great night’s sleep and keep you healthy.
  • Couples – From edge support to motion isolation, these mattresses are as comfortable for singles as they are for light-sleeping couples.
  • Anyone looking for a foam mattress – Bear is one of the top performers in its class and, between the three options, most shoppers will find what they are looking for.
  • Anyone who prefers a medium to medium-firm mattress.
  • Shoppers who are looking for a philanthropic element to their buying experience – Bear gives back by making donations and sponsoring equipment for childhood sports development.

Who won’t love Bear mattresses?

  • While I am of the belief that all Bear mattresses are great for all sleeping positions, I would caution that some side sleepers (and especially those who are small in stature) may find the Bear original a little on the firm side in terms of pressure relief and support.
  • Heavier individuals.
  • Shoppers looking for a soft mattress – Bear definitely tends towards the firmer end of the spectrum.

Old mattress removal:  Bear works with LoadUp to offer old mattress removal at a reduced price, giving you peace of mind that your old mattress is recycled or disposed of safely and in an environmentally friendly manner.

Payment accepted, financing:  Bear offers affordable 6, 12, and 18- month payment options.

Returns and refund:  You can return your Bear mattress for free when sent back within the 100-night trial period. Bear does require that you sleep on your mattress for 30 nights to give your body a chance to adjust and to allow the mattress to soften slightly.

Sleep trial period:  You get a 100-night trial period on all Bear mattresses.

Warranties:  The Bear original and Bear Pro mattresses come with ten-year warranties, while the Bear Hybrid comes with an impressive 20-year warranty.

Packaging and unpacking:  Bear bed-in-a-box mattresses are compressed, wrapped in plastic, rolled, and boxed. These mattresses are easy to unpack, but you should probably enlist the help of a buddy to make it that little bit easier. You can sleep on it as soon as it’s unboxed, but it can take up to two days to fully decompress.

Smell (off gassing), harmful chemicals:  While I personally didn’t experience any off-gassing, I read a couple of reviews that there was a lingering smell for about a day – something which really isn’t uncommon in a bed-in-a-box mattress. Bear’s materials are also Certi-PUR U.S. Certified and the original mattress has additional Greenguard Gold certification for meeting eco-friendly standards, which is especially reassuring around chemicals.

Where are the mattresses made?  Bear Mattresses are made to order in the U.S.A.

Bear mattress performance

If you are on the market for a new mattress, I expect you will probably find something to meet your expectations in the Bear stable of mattresses. From the standard original to the more luxury pillow-top Pro version, these mattresses really deliver when it comes to comfort. I’m very impressed by the performance and quality of each of these mattresses in comparison with other memory foam mattresses on the market. It’s hard not to love these beds.

All models offer great support and, in the Hybrid and Pro models in particular, I found these mattresses offer pressure relief and responsiveness – all of which make these amazing all-rounders.

I’m also intrigued by the Celliant cover. I’m not sure if the quality of sleep on Bear mattresses comes down to this, but it feels like one factor in a range of properties engineered for a comfortable night’s sleep. That said, who wouldn’t find the idea of Celliant alluring? If you’re athletic or suffer with aches and pains – especially if you are looking to stay with a foam mattress – you’ve got nothing to lose by picking Bear.

Construction layers and materials used

Bear Original

Topped with a Celliant cover for recuperation from exercise and promotion of circulation, this is one of the unique features of all Bear mattresses, promoting wellness and recuperation from sports and activities. This is followed by a gel-graphite memory foam aimed at cooling and this makes this mattress temperature neutral. The responsive transition foam layer acts as an effective buffer between the top layers and the high-density foam foundation layer for comfort.

Bear Hybrid

The Bear Hybrid also has the restorative Celliant top layer for those looking for the same technology with an enhanced construction. This top rests on an ultra-soft cooling gel foam layer, followed by premium comfort foam which, together, provide the ideal combination of support and softness. These foam layers cushion the individually-wrapped pocket coils in the layer below. Finally, the high-density support foam forms the foundation for added support for the overall mattress design and the quality and construction of this layer makes this a long-lasting, durable mattress which offers superior value for money.

Bear Pro

The Bear Pro is Bear’s top-of-the-range model, with a pillow-top Celliant top layer which has been clinically proven to promote wellbeing. The next layer is one of the big differences between the Bear Pro and the other models. It is made from copper-infused foam which has anti-microbial and cooling properties. Underneath this is the gel foam layer for cooling and comfort; shaping to the contours of your body. Next up is a transitional foam layer, which is more supportive in its function and, lastly, the same high-density foam base.

Bear mattresses firmness and pressure relief

I would rate the Bear original mattress as a medium to medium-firm, suitable for petite and medium-built people (although, if you are a petite side-sleeper, you may find it a little lacking in terms of pressure relief). The Bear Hybrid is suitable for all body types and all sleeping positions and is also a medium to medium-firm. The Bear Pro, on the other hand, I would class more as a medium and is suitable for people in all weight categories and all sleeping positions. If you are over 250lbs, however, foam is traditionally not the best choice and you may want to explore your options in some of the coil varieties.

Bear mattress edge support

Edge support is very subjective and, when it comes to Bear mattresses, one needs only look online to encounter a divergence of opinion. Like memory foam mattresses, I find the edge support on the Bear range really good when sitting on the edge and for perimeter sleeping.

Bear mattress temperature regulation

Bear Mattresses have a few properties geared towards cooling including the gel-graphite foam layer and, in the case of the Bear Pro, the copper foam layer – both of which wick moisture to cool you as you sleep. The coils of the Bear Hybrid also enhances the movement of air through the mattress, which has a cooling effect.

Motion isolation and noise

All three Bear mattresses are really quiet and provide really remarkable motion isolation. In both the all-foam and the coil varieties, the construction of the bed deadens movement for sleepers and it performs exceptionally well in this regard.

Is Bear suitable for couples and sex?

Bear Mattresses marry motion isolation and responsiveness to be a superb choice for couples. The foam in these mattresses, while firm, are more responsive during sex than most foam mattresses – something to consider for couples on the market for their next bed. Hence motion transfer is low but bounce is good.

Durability and longevity

Bear uses high-quality materials in their mattresses – and the base layer across all mattresses in the range is really hardy and durable. The Pro and Hybrid models come with 10-year warranties. The Hybrid, on the other hand, has a 20-year warranty – and that’s the kind of policy usually used by companies who have real faith in the longevity of their product.

Bed base

Bear mattresses are compatible with most bases – and Bear sells adjustable bases, foundations, and frames on their website. As always, it is worth finding out their recommended bases for each model of mattress.

Bear mattress complaints

While the vast majority of people love their Bear mattress, there are a few complaints we read about on the internet. One reviewer complained of increasing back pain, while another said the delivery time was slow and he didn’t believe it offered real value for money. Some other complaints include:

  • The bed softened quite quickly over time and this reduced the comfort for those who enjoyed Bear mattresses for their firmness.
  • One review reported that the mattress slept quite hot.
  • There are a few complaints of back pain experienced on Bear mattresses and a lack of support. These seem to mostly be for people with existing complaints, although there were a few reports of new back pain. Most complaints do not detail weight or sleeping position, but one did mention that the pain was experienced by a heavy individual.
  • Some side sleepers and heavy people reported dissatisfaction with their mattresses.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Bear mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4/5

4/5

Bear Mattresses rank amongst the top contenders within the foam mattress range for us. I believe that most people who are looking for foam mattresses which are a little more on the firm side will be very happy with a Bear mattress. The Hybrid and Pro in particular are exceptionally comfortable – firm, but responsive, with a cushioned, pillow-top feel that makes your bed one of the best places to be.

If you are an athlete or are looking for wellness properties in your mattress, the Celliant cover is an interesting value proposition for rest, recuperation, and recovery – especially if you have an injury. This is FDA-approved and has been clinically tested but, while I cannot vouch for the efficacy of the technology, the firmness and comfort of these mattresses make them a pleasure at the end of an active day.

FAQ

Is the Bear Mattress good for side sleepers?

If you are a petite side sleeper, I would say Bear mattresses may not offer the kind of pressure relief you are looking for. I say in the review above that Bear mattresses are for all sleeping positions – and I stand by that – but, if you are a side sleeper, it is worth being aware that complaints about Bear mattresses tend to be from side sleepers, with the firmness getting in the way of comfort. That said, it may be worth taking a gamble with the trial period. It might be worth it.

Do Bear Mattresses need a box spring?

On their website, Bear does not recommend using a traditional coil box spring.

Where can I buy a Bear mattress?

Bear mattresses are available on their website at bearmattress.com and on Amazon.

Which Bear mattress is best?

For me, the top mattress in the range has got to be the Hybrid. Combining the best of Bear’s foam construction with the pocketed coil layer, it’s a super mattress.
