My Green Mattress performance

My Green mattresses are primarily focused on providing eco-conscious solutions to a wide variety of sleeping types. Their latex mattress range incorporates Dunlop latex as their primary textile of choice. Interestingly enough they have included a latex-free option in this range – the Pure Echo – which we cover in this review.

Each of their mattresses has similar characteristics and feels with subtle design changes given to consider more specific sleeping needs across the entire series. We have selected 3 of the mattresses in the My Green mattress range – Natural Escape, Pure Echo, and Hope – and deconstructed them below to give you a better understanding of how these mattresses are designed.

Construction layers and materials used

As mentioned above, the My Green mattress design concept centers heavily around eco-conscious manufacturing choices. They have a dizzying collection of awards and certificates detailing their meticulously green construction methods. This includes a GOTS and GOL certifications which are some of the highest levels of eco-friendly certifications that manufacturers can achieve.

The wool that they use in the cover is ethically grown and harvested, and the Dunlop Latex used in the layering practically comes right out of the sap of a rubber tree, with only minor processing. The layering system used in these mattresses is simple but effective at providing support and comfort to their respective sleeper types.

Below is a brief breakdown of how each mattress in the My Green range is layered and designed. This will help you understand how they differ from each other in size and specifications.

Layering Breakdown

Natural Escape

The Natural Escape is My Green’s flagship mattress. It has an exceptionally simple but ergonomic layering system. The support base consists of an 8-inch thick layer of pocketed coils. These coils give the mattress it’s bounce and allow for a lot of ventilation in the mattress body. This support base is topped with a 3-inch natural latex comfort layer which has a very quick pressure response. These layers are topped with a thin sheet of organic wool and covered with a non-removable cotton cover.

Pure Echo

The Pure Echo mattress carries the same design concept as the Natural Escape, without the latex. This is to allow anyone with latex allergies to still enjoy the comfort and performance of My Green mattresses. In place of the latex comfort layer is a thick cotton batting substitute which is a bit less responsive than latex foam. This layer is housed on 8 inches of pocketed coils to give the mattress some extra bounce and contour support.

Hope

My Green’s Hope mattress consists of the same layering principles used in these prior mattresses, but with nearly every layer consisting of latex-based components. This mattress does not have any innerspring or pocketed coils and instead is made up of three layers of the same Dunlop latex, varying in density depending on placement and purpose. The Hope mattress is decidedly less bouncy than the other mattresses in this range, but it does still have a healthy degree of pressure response.

My Green Mattress firmness

Each of the respective models in the My Green mattress range has its own unique overall feel and firmness and will appeal to different sleeping types and habits. The firmest of the 3 is the Pure Echo mattress. Because it does not have any latex components in its comfort layer its surface is much less bouncy than the other two models and should be the popular choice for back sleepers.

The Hope mattress does not have the same tensile core that The Hope and Natural Escape do, and it is slightly less firm than the Pure Echo. We think the softest of these models is the Natural Escape, but even then, it still sits at a medium on our personal firmness scales. Many petite sleepers might find it difficult to settle their delicate frames into the hardier models, such as the Pure Echo, but may be able to find some form of comfort with the Natural Escape’s slightly more forgiving comfort layering.

Below is a simple chart we’ve designed to help you understand how each My Green mattress weighs up against the other in firmness levels. These are our own relative scales and experiences may differ from user to user.

Sleep position, pressure relief and body type

Every person has their own specific sleeping requirements and it’s pretty tricky to create a mattress that simultaneously suits the needs of every sleeper types profile. The My Green mattress range suits a broad range of sleeper types, but there are some who may need to seek their comfort elsewhere. Below we’ve broken down some of the major sleeping habits and sleeping types to show you which mattress in the My Green range best suits.

Back Sleepers

Most back sleepers tend to require a mattress that is firm enough to allow them to lay down as flat as possible without any resistance. When laying in this position, their weight is concentrated around the hips and lower back area and any excess sinkage will cause discomfort. The Pure Echo’s cotton batting does a great job of nesting the natural curves of these sleepers, similar to the way memory foam does. Most back sleepers between 150-350 lbs should enjoy the support his mattress provides.

Side Sleepers

The natural Escape mattress is a near-perfect fit for side sleepers. These sleeper types need a mattress that accommodates varying degrees of pressure across points along the length of their body. These pressure points are usually at the shoulder, sides, hip, and knee areas. The latex used in both the Natural Escape and Hope models is very hospitable on most side sleepers’ natural contours. These mattresses both have comfort layers that should be able to provide sufficient pressure relief and comfort to side sleepers between 150-350 lbs.

Stomach Sleepers

The needs of most stomach sleepers are parallel to that of back sleepers. This sleeping position usually requires concentrated support around the pelvis and hip area. Stomach sleepers also require a mattress with enough firmness to let their bodies plane out as flat as possible for optimum rest. The Pure Echo mattress’s cotton batting layer is a great substitute for traditional memory foam and should be a good fit for most stomach sleepers between the weights of 150-350lbs.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers have a slightly more complex set of sleeping requirements than that of sleepers who rest in a fixed position. These sleepers require a mattress that will allow them to shift positions with little to no resistance so that they are not stirred by their own natural sleeping movements. The Natural Escape’s latex comfort layer and coiled support base are a great combination for combination sleepers. Its comfort layer’s quick response time means that these sleepers can change positions during rest with virtually zero hindrance.

Heavy Sleepers

It goes without saying that heavier sleepers need more structural integrity in their mattresses than others do. We feel that the Pure Echo will probably provide the level of stability that heavier frames need to feel comfortably supported during rest periods. The cotton batting layer works well with the pocketed coils to nest heavier contours without providing uncomfortable levels of resistance against the frames of larger sleeping types. The Natural Escape and Pure Echo also have enhanced edge support, making it a good choice for taller sleepers to try out.

Petite Sleepers

Petite and smaller sleepers usually require a mattress that is soft enough to let their lighter weight sink into the surface level. While the My Green mattress range does have great pressure relieving ability, we think that most smaller sleepers will probably struggle to settle into their comfort layers as these mattresses are just a bit too firm for light bodyweight. Smaller back or stomach sleepers can take a chance on the Pure Echo model, which uses a cotton batting in its comfort layer instead of latex, but we generally feel as though these mattresses may be too firm for these sleeper types.

My Green Mattress edge support

The entire My Green series has some of the most consistent edge support we have come across in eco-conscious mattresses. This is largely due to the extra re-inforcing that they use in their pocketed coil layer. Most mattresses with coils or innersprings have about the same level of firmness throughout the entire mattress body.

The Natural Escape and Pure Echo models both come with extra support in the middle third of their coiled layer, as well as extra support along the edges. This translates to a very quick responding edge support and these mattresses have no noticeable excess dip along their sides.

The Hope mattress does not come with a pocketed coil layer and ha a bit more roll-off than its counterparts, but we don’t think this will cause any major discomfort to most sleeper types.

My Green Mattress temperature regulation

Temperature regulation can be quite a fickle factor for some folks to grade when buying a mattress. There are sleepers that easily overheat and require some form of active cooling, while others may need a bed that doesn’t have too high of a chill factor. Latex foam is well known for its ability to keep efficiently help regulate body heat, even in harsher climates.

Both the Natural Escape and Hope mattresses use latex in their comfort layers, and the Natural Escape has even more added ventilation due to its thick layer of pocketed coils in the support base. Even though the Pure Echo does not have any latex in it’s layering, it also has a pocketed coil in its support base and should only sleep slightly warmer than the other models in the My Green mattress range.

Here is a quick table to show you how each mattress in the My Green series scores on our personal temperature regulation charts.

Motion isolation and noise

Getting a new mattress means a whole lot more than just buying something that feels comfortable. Many people want a bed that is quiet relatively motionless so as to lessen the likelihood of being disturbed during sleep. Especially sensitive sleepers will want to opt for the Pure Echo model, which is My Green’s latex-free model. While latex does do a great job of relieving pressure, it can be a bit too bouncy for light sleepers, especially when used in conjunction with an innerspring base.

The Pure Echo has a cotton batting comfort layer which still does a great job of housing the contours of the body while diffusing any motion on the surface caused by you or your partner’s movements during sleep. Pocketed coils also make significantly less noise than traditional innersprings as each coil has it’s own individual casing to stop any noise created under pressure change. Couples or sleepers looking for a mattress with virtually no bounce can give the Hope mattress a try, but we feel that it might not be as efficient as the Pure Echo at isolating motion on the surface level of the mattress.

Is My Green Mattress suitable for couples and sex?

There are a few reasons that we back the My Green mattress range for couples. In the section above we discussed these mattresses’ consistent motion isolation and impressive edge support. This is very beneficial to couples, who need to make greater use of the surface area of their mattress than single sleepers.

The Natural Escape has a thick layer of springy latex as its comfort layer, and this works well in conjunction with the pocketed coils to give couples generous amounts of pressure response for comfortable sex life. If a mattress lacks bounce it can tend to cause resistance during sex, making the activity less desirable for couples.

Thankfully, these mattresses all have some semblance of efficient pressure response and most couples should find the My Green range to be a pleasurable experience for their sleeping environments.

Durability and longevity

Some may think that manufacturing products with eco-friendly methods and resources can lead to a negative effect on their durability. We don’t find this to be the case with the My Green range, and this is probably what bumps their price tag slightly higher than their competition. Latex foam’s incredible tensility is a testament to its impressive durability, and My Green has a firm understanding of how to apply this principle to their mattress designs. As such, they offer their consumers a 20-year warranty with any of their mattress products, which is twice the usual industry standard. We can’t personally foresee any of these mattresses breaking down prematurely unless you are part of a heavier couple and live in very extreme climates.

Bed base

My Green only offers one type of bed base to go with their mattress from their online store. This is a wooden slatted platform that suits the overall concept of these mattresses very well. Because the Natural Escape and Pure Echo have spring layers in their support base, they won’t work that well on any sort of adjustable bed or box spring. Latex also does not generally work very ergonomically with adjustable bases due to its elasticity. Solid platforms also work with these mattresses, although the Hope mattress may not have adequate ventilation to sit comfortably on these base types. We would advise trying to stick with the wooden slatted frame for these mattresses as they are very gentle on the base layers of these mattress types and should enhance their overall durability.

My Green Mattress complaints

  • The one obvious deterrent in the My Green range is that they’re notably more expensive than other eco-conscious mattresses in their class bracket. While we do think they are worth the price they come at, we think there are many who may simply opt for something else based on price accessibility alone.
  • We would have liked to have seen a stronger support base in the Hope mattress model. Three layers of Latex are used in the layering system, and we feel that its overall sturdiness would have been enunciated with a more solid support base.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the My Green Mattress brand?
