Quick snapshot of the GhostBed vs Purple

The Purple Mattress combines memory foam and Purple’s signature hyper-elastic polymer to give a unique-feeling medium mattress which is both responsive and supportive. This distinctive feel is carried over into Purple’s two hybrid models – the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier – which use this same proprietary Purple Grid, foam, and individually pocketed coils. The Purple Hybrid Premier has two thickness options, with differing pressure relief between the two. More to come on that later.

GhostBed combines traditional materials with an interesting construction to offer four different beds for sleepers. The GhostBed Mattress is a medium-firm all-foam mattress which merges the responsiveness of latex foam with the support of memory foam for sleeper comfort. A stellar performer for cooling, the all-foam GhostBed Luxe is medium with a plush feel. The GhostBed Flex is a hybrid mattress with a medium feel, which has struck a keen balance between bounce, support, and pressure relief. Their top-tier GhostBed 3D Matrix is a medium hybrid mattress with something of a unique feeling, combining pocketed coils with foam and GhostBed’s gel polymer material which hugs the body and regulates temperature. What are the key differences between the two brands?

Each of these mattresses have features which make them distinctive from one another, including:

  • The feel – Purple’s hyper-elastic polymer gives it a special gel foam feeling – something we haven’t encountered in another mattress. GhostBed combines traditional materials with some interesting designs to give you different foam feelings depending on the mattress you choose.
  • Cooling – To be clear, none of the mattresses in this comparison sleep hot. Purple ranks in the temperature neutral to medium cool bracket (as does the GhostBed Original) but, of the two brands, we would give GhostBed the edge on cooling (especially the Luxe)
  • Price – If the price tag matters, GhostBed is cheaper when it comes to their all-foam models.

Who is the GhostBed mattress a better fit for?

  • Hot sleepers.
  • If you aren’t put off by the idea of something different – but it mustn’t be too different – GhostBed designs slightly stand out from the norm. Their proprietary materials, while contributing to the interesting feel and performance of these beds, aren’t a huge deviation from the foam mattress feeling many people love.
  • While all the mattresses in this comparison are responsive, with some models which are especially effective at absorbing motion, the GhostBed hybrid models have the slight upper hand for couples for providing particularly good edge support. It is also probably a more accommodating choice in terms of feel, which is great when you are balancing the preferences of two people.
  • Anyone shopping on a budget will find the most reasonable mattress models in the GhostBed camp.
  • If you are looking for a mattress with a longer-than-usual warranty period, GhostBed mattresses come with tiered 20- and 25-year warranties on their mattresses.

Who is the Purple mattress a better fit for?

  • Anyone who believes experimentation can yield the greatest reward will find a particular uniqueness to the Purple mattresses. You will either love it or you will struggle to warm to it but, either way, it is right up your alley if you are looking for something fresh.
  • While all the mattresses in this comparison are more on the firm side of the spectrum, Purple’s hybrid mattresses could be the best of the batch for side sleepers.

GhostBed vs Purple company policy comparison

The common theme across the histories of GhostBed and Purple is innovation. Purple came about because two inventive brothers applied their minds to the world of cushioning and hyper-elastic polymer was born. Integrated into mattresses, they created a product that adds a different dimension to mattress feeling (which, whether you love the feeling or not, is a cool story and a great mission).

Purple have been making mattresses since 2013, have an A+ BBB rating, and their foams all hold CertiPUR-US certification for safety.

GhostBed is the brainchild of Marc Werner who, quite simply, has a passion for making comfortable mattresses. Founder of Nature’s Sleep, Marc struggled to sleep without pain after three neck surgeries and so applied himself to improving the world of mattresses. The result is a comfortable, supportive mattress which can be bought from home.

GhostBed was launched in 2015. Nature’s Sleep is not BBB accredited. Their materials are CertiPUR-US accredited and regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission for low VOC emissions for indoor air quality.

GhostBed construction and materials used

GhostBed Original – The original GhostBed mattress is 11 inches thick – slightly thicker than other all-foam beds on the market. It has a viscose / polyester blended cover and this is followed by 1.5 inches of aerated latex foam. This layer gives the bed its bounce and responsiveness and this fantastic natural material also has open-cell construction and natural breathability. This is followed by two inches of GhostBed’s proprietary gel memory foam, which has large-cell construction for relief and cooling. Last up is 7.5 inches of high-density polyfoam for support.

GhostBed Luxe – The 13-inch Luxe model is all about cooling and every one of its seven layers contribute to its overall cooling. Its quilted cover is made from Ghost Ice Fabric with an inch of cooling fiber and an inch of gel memory foam for ventilation, cooling, and comfort. This rests on top of a Ghost Ice layer, which GhostBed says adjusts the sleeping environment once it detects heat. This is followed by a layer of gel memory foam and then GhostBed’s proprietary Ghost Bounce layer which has an almost latex-like responsiveness while offering contouring and pressure relief. Lastly, there is 7.5 inches of high-density polyfoam at its base.

GhostBed Flex – The 13-inch Flex model is essentially the same construction as the GhostBed Luxe except, at its base, it has individually wrapped coils, surrounded by GhostBed’s ‘Spirited Edge’ edge support. This rests on a high-density support layer.

GhostBed 3D Matrix – GhostBed’s top-tier mattress is 12 inches and seven layers. It has a Ghost Ice cooling cover for temperature regulation. Under this and on top of the first foam layer is GhostBed’s 3D Matrix Polymer. This exclusive material conducts heat away from the body, but also gives the bed less of that sinking memory foam feeling through additional responsiveness. This rests on top of two inches of gel memory foam. The one-inch layer of Ghost 3D Matrix Transition Foam makes for enhanced pressure relief and contouring. The coils in this mattress are reinforced on the edges for that extra bit of support and rest on an inch of support foam.

Purple construction and materials used

Purple Mattress – The 9.5-inch original Purple Mattress has a high-density polyfoam base, followed by a polyfoam transitional layer. The Purple Mattress has two inches of their hyper-elastic polymer, which is laid out in a grid. The air flow of this is supported by the breathability of the SoftFlex cover.

Purple Hybrid – This 12-inch mattress has a thin foam support layer, topped with individually pocketed coils and a layer of transitional foam. This hybrid model also has a two-inch Purple Grid layer and Purple’s premium StretchMax cover.

Purple Hybrid Premier – This hybrid model comes in two varieties which differ in the amount of hyper-elastic polymer included in the construction. If you opt for the 12-inch thickness, you get three inches of hyper-elastic polymer. If you go for the 13-inch thickness, you get four inches of hyper-elastic polymer. Both varieties are topped with the StretchMax cover, with the Purple Grid resting on a layer of transitional foam, the pocketed coils, and a thin support foam layer.

Mattress delivery

Purple offers free shipping within the contiguous United States. They can also ship to Canada. Shipping times may vary, but mattresses normally leave the Purple warehouse three to five business days from when you place your order and can take an additional three to five business days to arrive at your address. If you opt for the white-glove delivery option, this can take a bit longer.

White-glove delivery comes at an additional cost. These mattresses are compressed, rolled, and arrive in a bag or box as the case may be. They are relatively easy to unbox – especially if there is more than one person around – but white-glove delivery is a good choice if you are worried about your new mattress set-up.

GhostBed ships their mattresses within 24 hours of receiving your order. Shipping is free throughout all 48 continental United States – and they ship to Hawaii and Alaska for an additional fee. They ship via FedEx and your order should arrive within three to five business days from the date of leaving the warehouse.

Like with Purple, GhostBed mattresses are compressed, rolled, and arrive in a four-foot box. They also offer white-glove delivery for an extra cost, but most people won’t have too much trouble getting their mattresses unrolled and ready to go.

GhostBed

GhostBed – While the firmness of a mattress will depend on the weight, the original GhostBed mattress offers probably the firmest construction of the range (although it certainly isn’t a true firm mattress). It merges support of its bottom foam layers with the latex foam top layer for a balance of support and comfort.

GhostBed Luxe – The Luxe comes in as more of a medium, with the comfort layers giving it a plush feeling.

GhostBed Flex – The Flex is also a medium on the firmness scale, but has all the comfort and supportive features of memory foam coupled with the responsiveness of coils.

GhostBed 3D Matrix – As with the GhostBed Flex, the 3D Matrix comes in at a medium firmness with a neutral foam feel, coupling the best features of foam with the bounce of pocketed coils.

Purple

The Purple Mattress – The unique pressure relief and responsiveness meets the support of memory foam in this medium mattress.

The Purple Hybrid – The Hybrid model has all the benefits of hyper-elastic polymer when it comes to bounce and comfort, but it is that little bit firmer for extra support. It is closer to a medium-firm.

The Purple Hybrid Premier – The firmness of this mattress will depend on the thickness profile you choose. This is because the thicker mattress has an additional inch of hyper-elastic polymer. If you go for the 13-inch model, you can expect your mattress to be a little softer. Overall, however, this model is between a medium and a medium-firm.

Which mattress is more suitable for couples and sex?

These mattresses are fairly evenly matched when it comes to the properties important for sex. All the mattresses in this comparison are responsive, which is usually preferred for the ease of changing position and motion during sex.

If you have decided that you are going to go with an all-foam mattress, it is worth mentioning that the GhostBed mattress is probably one of your best options if you are looking for responsiveness for sex – with its latex top layer giving it a lot of responsiveness for an all-foam mattress. The hyper-elastic polymer across all Purple mattresses has this quality, so we doubt that decisions will be made based on this point.

Motion isolation and noise

GhostBed – Across all GhostBed mattresses, we did not detect any sound. They also all offer impressive motion isolation. This is particularly good in the Flex and 3D Matrix models.

Purple – The Purple Original offers about the same level of motion isolation and sound as your typical all-foam mattress. It is very quiet and works well to deaden motion transfer. The motion isolation of the hybrid models is exceptionally good here and few people will find themselves disturbed by motion during the night.

Body types and pressure relief

GhostBed

We usually recommend hybrid mattresses for heavier people out there, but there are a couple of things that make GhostBed a viable option if you weigh in a bit higher and have your heart set on memory foam. This comes down to the durability of the materials and the thicker profile for an all-foam bed you will find with GhostBed. A hybrid will still be ideal, but this is an interesting observation.

For the most part, the foam GhostBed and GhostBed Luxe will be best-suited to people who weigh up to about 250lbs, while the Flex and 3D Matrix will work for anyone weighing up to about 350lbs.

If you are a strict side sleeper, GhostBed gives you a few options. However, none of these mattresses offer the softness some side sleepers may need for hip and shoulder relief in this position – something to bear in mind if you are sensitive to pain in these areas. The Luxe will be the best choice for side sleepers, while the 3D Matrix will likely be too firm for most side sleepers.

The GhostBed Mattress will work for back, combination, and side sleepers, while the Luxe and Flex will work for all sleeping positions. The 3D Matrix will be best for back and combination sleepers – and we believe it may be too firm for side sleepers and not firm enough for stomach sleepers to achieve ideal alignment.

Purple

The Purple bed is better suited to petite and average-sized individuals and we urge heavier folks to check out the hybrid models for durability, support, and comfort. The Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier are suited to all body types.

The Purple and Purple Hybrid Premier will be comfortable choices for all sleeping positions. If you are a side sleeper, we would recommend one of these two and, if you are looking for as much pressure relief as possible for hips and shoulders, the 13-inch Purple Hybrid Premier is going to be your best bet. The Purple Hybrid is best for back, stomach, and combination sleepers and comes in a bit too firm for most side sleepers.

Edge support

The edge support on the entire range of Purple beds is good. Hyper-elastic polymer on its own does not provide very good support here, but it will help most people to feel comfortable when on the edge of the mattress.

The GhostBed foam mattresses also offer good edge support which will be satisfactory for most. The ‘Spirited Edge’ of the hybrid models makes for excellent support along the perimeter of the bed, with reinforced coils along the edges to keep you securely on the bed without any rolling sensation. If edge support will influence your choice of mattress, the GhostBed Luxe and GhostBed Matrix 3D come out tops here.

Temperature regulation

If you are worried about getting hot during the night, every mattress in this comparison offers varying degrees of cooling. The GhostBed and Purple range of mattresses are all medium cool, giving the average person peace of mind that they won’t heat up during the night.

GhostBed’s latex foam and gel memory foam layers make it noticeably cooler than most all-foam mattresses. Purple’s temperature regulation largely comes down to breathability. The grid layout of hyper-elastic polymer keeps air flowing throughout the mattresses – especially in the hybrid models. Hyper-elastic polymer also doesn’t seem to absorb heat.

The GhostBed Luxe, Flex, and 3D Matrix are all cool mattresses, combining cooling features with construction to give these mattresses this quality.

That said, we would say the GhostBed Luxe is probably the coolest of all the mattresses we are looking at here – and is sold as ‘the coolest bed in the world. It has a cooling cover with latex and gel foam and their thermo-sensitive Ghost Ice layer to disperse body heat.

The Flex and 3D Matrix combine GhostBed’s cooling technologies with the airflow of hybrid beds to be cool options if you insist on a bed with coils.

Durability and longevity

Without question, both Purple and GhostBed adhere to high standards in the manufacture of their mattresses. Across all models, you get quality to match price – but what does this mean for longevity? When it comes to any mattress, both the manufacturer and you will determine how long it lasts, but the industry standard is around seven years. With both GhostBed and Purple, we think it is reasonable to expect these mattresses to last that long – if not longer – with the right care and under the right circumstances.

We checked for consumer reports around durability on online forums to see what customers had to say. The reports we found were of wear and tear, with some customers reporting sagging of their Purple and GhostBed mattresses.

It is worth noting that GhostBed offers a 20-25 year warranty on their mattresses, which is about double the industry norm. They are relatively new players in the mattress market and this warranty term speaks to a belief in their brand.

Bed base

Purple mattresses are compatible with most bed bases, but the company recommends their platform bed base for the best support. They retail their adjustable PowerBase, Purple Foundation, and Platform Bed on their website.

GhostBed doesn’t recommend older box spring designs with their mattresses, stating that a slatted frame base works best. They retail a range of bases online including the Box Spring, the Slatted Frame, and the Adjustable Base Frame with a whole host of tech features.

Final verdict: Which mattress do we recommend?

No matter what we think about any of the mattresses from Purple and GhostBed, your final choice is going to come down to your personal preference. In general, however, Purple and GhostBed are both options if you are on the market for a mattress. It is just a matter of balancing certain key differences to find what works for you (and your partner if you are shopping as a couple. These questions might help to guide you in your final decision:

  • Firstly, is cooling important to you?  If you sleep hot, the GhostBed Luxe is the coolest mattress of all the models in this comparison and the GhostBed Flex and 3D Matrix are very effective at cooling too.
  • If not, are you looking to move away from beds with a memory foam feel to something more unique? If so, Purple has something of a signature feel in the mattress market.
  • What’s your budget? The entry level GhostBed model comes in a bit cheaper than the Purple, but make sure you compare the prices in the table above as you work through the range.
  • What is your sleep position? If you are a strict side sleeper, the Purple and Purple Hybrid Premier are going to be the best in terms of pressure relief in this position. It is also worth being aware that the 3D Matrix, for instance, doesn’t really offer the firmness you might be looking for to achieve ideal spinal alignment as a stomach sleeper.
