Want to save the planet as you sleep? Then Avocado may be the bed brand of your dreams. The retailer is committed to environmental sustainability, making 100% certified organic mattresses that won’t cost the earth! In 2016, founders Jeff and Alexandra D’Andrea found a gap in the market after unsuccessfully trying to buy an affordable 100% Green mattress for themselves. Today, their mattresses are hand-made in the USA, using organic latex, natural cotton and wool which is all sustainably sourced. The company sell Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan hybrid mattresses as well as luxury eco-friendly sleep related products on their website and at two Experience Centers.

During your first 10 years of cover if there is a fault Avocado either repair the fault or replace your mattress. If a defect occurs from Year 11 onwards, customers have the option to buy a new Avocado mattress and pay 50% of the original cost price. This amount is increased by 5% each year, (so, in year 12, 55%, year 13, 60%…etc). To make a claim customers must email: support@avocadomattress.com, and will be sent a warranty ticket to complete and submit.

Packaging and unpacking:  Avocado mattresses come compressed, vacuum-sealed and rolled, shipped in a large cardboard box. Mattresses must be opened within a fortnight of their arrival to avoid any compression damage. They are either delivered via FedEx for you to set up, or their In Home Delivery Team will do this for you. Avocado mattresses are made from natural materials which are heavier than memory foam or poly-foam mattresses. Two people are needed to lift the box. Unpack the mattress in the room you plan to use it, lay the box on its side and slide the mattress out. The mattress is wrapped in two separate layers of plastic unroll and remove the outer white plastic first, positioning the mattress on your bed foundation. Once the mattress is flat and in place, cut away the clear plastic and watch it expand. Allow 30 minutes before laying on your mattress. In a few hours it will have fully regained its original shape and thickness.

Smell (off gassing), harmful chemicals: Avocado mattresses use natural and organic materials, together with safe eco-friendly manufacturing processes. The mattresses are non-toxic and have no polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical flame retardants or any chemical adhesives. So, there is no off-gassing. But, don’t assume the mattresses won’t have an odor because even organic materials will have a smell. Avocado mattresses use 100% GOLS organic certified Latex (Global Organic Latex Standard), which is sustainably harvested from rubber trees at their Indian co-operative. So, customers will notice a rubber/latex odor when first unboxing the mattress. This smell will disappear in 12-36 hours, once you ventilate the room and the mattress has the chance to breathe.

Where are the mattresses made?  Avocado mattresses are made in the USA, originally designed in Hoboken, New Jersey back in 2016. All models are handcrafted in their California facility. The company use non-toxic, organic materials and low-impact, environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. Their aim is to create environmentally friendly mattresses that the average American can afford.

Avocado mattresses measurements and pricing

Avocado’s mission is to make Green affordable to the average American. It’s useless to pitch Avocado’s prices against competitors who are not also fully green or adhering to stringent environmental guidelines, producing fully Green mattresses, using low-impact processes, as this impacts cost. Consumers buy into Avocado’s ethos, willing to spend more to buy a Green, clean mattress built to last. Avocado’s prices are competitive when pitched against organic mattress retailers like Awara, Saatva and Plush Beds. Prices quoted are the MSRP at the time of writing.

Avocado mattress performance review

In this Avocado mattress review we talk about construction material and durability. All foam mattresses give great contour and pressure relief, but often sleep hot and don’t have a lot of strength or a long lifespan. Whereas innerspring mattresses are bouncier and supportive, sleep cooler, but lack the cushioning support of foams. Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan are both latex-coil hybrids which combine the best of both to create a more comfortable, durable mattress.

The latex upper layer gives cushioning, conformity, and bounce – so sleepers lay comfortably cool up on top and can move around easily. The innerspring coils then work to distribute the upper weight, providing strength and eliminating any upper foam dipping or sagging. Complex innerspring units with pocketed coils, like the Quantum® Edge Elite Combi-Zone® unit used in both models, offer targeted pressure relief and let air circulate more freely to cool the mattress down

Construction layers and materials used

Designed to be luxurious, affordable and green, Avocado mattresses are kind to the planet and the consumer. Made from natural and organic materials and using eco-friendly production processes these mattresses are non-toxic and do not use harmful chemicals. Their comfort layers comprise of 100% GOLS organic certified latex, (Global Organic Latex Standard) which is harvested from rubber trees at their Indian co-operative, along with 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) wool and cotton.

Avocado’s PETA certified fully Vegan mattress replaces its wool components with cotton. All Avocado products are GreenGuardGold and eco-INSTITUT Certified, satisfying strict emission standards for pollutants and chemical exposure. If you want to sleep clean on a green mattress made with minimal environmental impact, then why not give Avocado a go!

Avocado Green

This firm 11” luxury hybrid mattress comprises of organic wool and cotton, natural Dunlop latex and a complex layer of innerspring coils. Its cotton outer cover has wool batting and is button tufted – creating a soft, quilted, luxurious upper surface with fabrics that wick away heat and moisture. Its upper comfort layer has 3” of bouncy aerated latex – a breathable, durable foam that repels allergens.  Supporting the comfort layer is a complex system of recycled steel coils, the Quantum® Edge Elite Combi-Zone® unit.

Featuring 5 zones of pocketed coils which flex independently, this advanced innerspring unit offers optimal support for your hips, back and shoulders. It also has reinforced coils along its outer edge for advanced edge support. Customers can upgrade and buy a Pillow Top version of this mattress, adding 2” of plush latex for softer cushioning and pressure relief.

Avocado Vegan

Released in November 2018 due to growing consumer demand, Avocado’s 11” Vegan hybrid mattress is almost identical to the original design, featuring GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified cotton and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils, but as a certified Vegan mattress eliminates a few components. This mattress contains NO animal by-products, the original model’s wool batting is substituted for extra thick layers of Texas grown cotton and the wool rosettes in its button tufting are replaced too.

Both models also have sturdy stitched handles on either sides which makes lifting and repositioning the mattress easy. The outer cover of these mattresses can be spot cleaned and are not removable. Customers can also upgrade this Vegan mattress by buying a Pillow Top, adding 2” of bouncy and resilient natural latex for a softer experience.

All Vegan mattresses are made separately, after machines have been repeatedly deep cleaned to ensure no transfer of animal by-products.

Avacado Green Vegan Mattress Layers

Avocado firmness and pressure relief

Remember our testers’ feedback is relative to their height to weight ratio. Now let’s get this straight, these mattresses are FIRM, FIRM, FIRM, so are ideal for heavyweight sleepers (220lbs + over) who want the cushion and bounce of latex but need supportive coils for weight management and pressure relief. Inside their base is the Quantum® Edge Elite Combi-Zone® unit featuring up to 1,414 different gauge pocketed steel coils arranged into five zones.

This makes the mattress noticeably firmer around your lower back and softer around your neck, shoulders and feet. Customers who do not want a firm mattress can increase the softness by adding a 2” latex Pillow Top. Our sleep testers rated Avocado’s Green and Vegan’s standard mattresses as FIRM. Testing both models with the softer, plush Pillow Top, our team rated them as MEDIUM FIRM.

Avocado Green

This responsive, firm 11” mattress has the bounce of an innerspring and because it is tufted sleepers get that pillow top feel. Natural latex compresses more generally around your whole body, meaning lightweight sleepers will stay much higher up on the mattress, instead of sinking deep into it. You will not get that memory foam hug or the same deep level of pressure relief. Although this complex innerspring unit does provide some targeted pressure relief. On the whole, this is a bouncy but firm, responsive mattress.

Avocado Vegan

This is also a responsive firm 11” mattress almost identical to the original model, but adapted to become fully Vegan substituting wool for Texas cotton in the upper quilting. Because the Avocado Vegan mattress shares the same latex layers and zoned coil unit, it matches Avocado Green for its firmness and feel. We assumed it may be a little softer, because of the cotton batting inside the quilted upper cover, but our sleep testers didn’t notice a difference.

Sleep position and body type

These 11” latex-coil hybrids harmoniously merge innerspring support with the cushion and comfort of quality foam, both models have a similar FIRM feel, likely to be too firm for lightweight side sleepers.  The natural latex layer’s response and bounce make it a great combination sleepers. Because these hybrids are thick and reasonably solid, we’d suggest them for heavyweight sleepers (over 250lbs) who like the cushioning pressure relief of upper foams but need the guaranteed support from innerspring coils.

Avocado Green

This 11” hybrid mattress has natural, breathable, bouncy latex over a complex coiled support unit, letting you easily move around and switch positions, as its innerspring unit helps with spinal alignment.  This makes it ideal for Back, Combo and Stomach sleepers who like that overall firm feel, but want some upper cushioning without too much sink. The 8” individual pocketed coils in the base unit contour and support your body, but also improve airflow and cool the lower mattress down. Great for heavyweight customers who sleep hot. The Avocado Green 13” Pillow Top version features an additional 2” latex layer for advanced comfort and pressure relief which works for Back, Combination and heavyweight Side sleepers.

Avocado Vegan

This 11” hybrid mattress is almost identical to the Avocado Green, but swaps two components to remove any animal by-products – the wool battening in its quilted cover is replaced with natural Texas cotton, along with the wool rosettes on the button tufting. This alteration doesn’t really impact upon the feel or firmness of the mattress. The Avocado Vegan standard model has a firm feel and will suit mid- to heavyweight Back/Combination or Stomach sleepers. The softer, cushioned Pillow Top version adds another 2” of natural Dunlop latex and is a better choice for Back/Combination and more heavyweight Side Sleepers. Also, both models feature an innerspring base unit with reinforced perimeter coils and so will both work for any rare Edge sleepers out there.

Avocado edge support

If you want a firm, durable mattress that scores high on edge support, then you’re in luck. The comfort and support layers in both mattresses give the user an even, cushioned and comforting sleep surface. The comfort layers in these hybrids are bolstered by the Quantum® Edge Elite Combi-Zone® coil unit in the base, using hundreds of steel pocketed coils ordered into ergonomic zones all flexing independently while responding to pressure.

This innovative innerspring unit also has 2 rows of reinforced coils along its entire outer edge to maximize edge support. Avocado Green and Vegan mattresses both give equally impressive levels of edge support. So, say goodbye to that uneasy rolling-off feeling you get with all foam mattresses. Our team were impressed with the balanced edge support and would confidently recommend these to couples and edge huggers.

Temperature regulation

Innerspring mattresses sleep cooler than all-foam models. Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan use natural aerated latex over pocketed coils. Their upper comfort layers comprise of natural, breathable materials and their innerspring supportive core circulates air more evenly throughout the base.  Breathable fibers inside the organic cotton and wool quilted upper cover work to keep the surface temperature level low, helping the sleeper regulate their body temperature.

Meanwhile, the open-cell structure of its Dunlop latex layer creates a cooler sleep surface – much cooler than that of memory foam. Also, because latex lacks conforming sink and doesn’t cling to the sleeper like memory foam does, it’s less likely to trap and retain body heat. Our sleep testers were impressed at how the Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan mattresses handled temperature regulation and rated them both for sleeping Cool.

Motion isolation and noise

Innerspring hybrids are bouncy, allowing surface movement to travel across the bed more freely whereas, all-foam mattresses excel at deadening movement and so are popular with couples.  Because Avocado’s Green and Vegan hybrids use latex over a coiled base unit, we didn’t expect them to have a high capacity for isolating motion.

Surprisingly, both mattresses performed well on our tests, absorbing and diffusing some of the upper level movement. This is likely due to the coiled innerspring unit, as when its coils each flex to pressure from above this will dissipate some surface level movement. Hybrid mattresses won’t eliminate movement as effectively as memory foam mattresses, but both Avocado models definitely lessened the level of disturbance. Also, if you buy a Pillow Top version, the extra latex increases your comfort layer density, which will give you more cushioning up top.

Testing for noise, a slight creaking was audible as our sleep testers moved their body-weight around on top when the coiled springs flexed in response. The noise wasn’t loud enough to wake sleepers up, or to stop you falling asleep in the first place but was noticeable. It was at a level most customers would expect for a modern innerspring hybrid.

Is Avocado suitable for couples and sex?

Avocado mattresses are firm, dense, durable and ideal for couples. First off, its upper latex layer is responsive and bouncy, keeping sleepers cool as they move around easily. Ideal for couples at play who want to quickly switch positions without too much resistance. You won’t be waking up hot and sweaty in the night either, because its comfort layers natural materials are breathable and wick away heat and moisture.

Its complex innerspring base unit creates a firm, stable and even surface across the entirety of the mattress – so you can confidently use the whole bed space. There’s also reinforced perimeter coils for enhanced edge support, so even if your partner pushes you to the edge, you’ll still feel fully supported. What couples may have to adjust to (especially those moving from an all foam model), is the slight creaking sound as the coils flex and stretch, bearing weight from above.  Although, this is perfectly normal with pocketed coil hybrids.

Durability and longevity

Both of these hybrids are thick, luxurious, durable mattresses using high-grade, quality, natural materials. Innerspring hybrids last longer than all-foam models and sleep cooler too. Latex foam copes well when supported by coils, which manage weight distribution evenly and help to eliminate sagging (which is a common problem with all foam mattresses). Wool and organic cotton are naturally long-lasting materials and the Dunlop latex is durable, breathable, bouncy and antimicrobial, repelling dust mites and other allergens.

Because Avocado Green was the first mattress sold after the company launched in 2016, it’s too soon to assess long-term durability. Scrutinizing the quality of the materials used and the overall mattress, we are confident both models will give consumers a reasonably long lifespan (12+ years), if maintained properly. The Avocado Green mattress could potentially outlive the Avocado Vegan, simply because wool is hardier than organic cotton. Both mattresses come with a 25-year warranty which will reassure customers that the brand has confidence in their life expectancy.

Bed base

Don’t underestimate the importance of your bed foundation. Never pair a high quality mattress with an unsuitable bed base as it can damage your mattress and invalidate its warranty. Because the Avocado Green and Vegan mattresses are both latex hybrids with coils in their base we’d recommend using a firm, sturdy, flat bed base; like a Solid Wood Foundation, a Box Spring, or even a Slatted Base (with slats under 4” apart). Although, Avocado say the thickness of both mattresses means you can put them straight onto the floor! If you’re looking to buy a new bed base, Avocado sell a wooden mattress foundation and a small selection of bed frames.

The Avocado Green Mattress Foundation is an easily assembled solid wooden frame with sturdy wooden slats, creating a simple, supportive base. Their new, Avocado Metal Frame is made from reclaimed steel and can be bolted together in minutes. The company also sell two wooden bed frames which are handcrafted at their LA facility and made from 100% reclaimed wood: the rustic, raw Eco Bed Frame, and their Heavy Duty Natural Wooden Bed Frame.

Avocado mattress complaints

Looking at consumer review sites and also Avocado’s social media platforms, our teams read customer feedback, tracking good and bad reviews. To better understand the customer experience and determine some of their issues:

  • Mattresses too firm: Some customers complained the mattress were way too firm and uncomfortable and as a consequence of this found they were waking up with joint pain.
  • Customer services: Customers complained of difficulties when communicating with the online customer service team as email responses were sometimes slow. Customers were unhappy with some elements of this service.
  • Issues with mattress topper. A customer complained of issues with the Avocado Green mattress topper and experienced sliding issues with the topper not fitting snug or securely to the mattress and was repeatedly re-adjusting.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Avocado mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4.7/5

4.7/5

Avocado go all-out to ensure the integrity and quality of their mattresses, with the highest environmental accreditation for their source materials, production and products. Making them a trusted ‘go-to’ green luxury lifestyle brand for eco-savvy consumers wanting a fully natural, low-impact sleep experience. The company also give back, as 1% of their sales are donated to environmental non-profits and all returned mattresses are donated to charity. Analyzing some of the negative customer feedback, what they may need to prioritize on now is increased availability of their customer service team (although any anonymous queries our team members raised with them were promptly answered).

The quality and performance of both Avocado mattresses impressed our sleep team. These hybrids look expensive and use highly durable natural materials, so pairing these with a sophisticated innerspring unit gives customers a balanced, solid mattress set to have even overall wear and a formidable lifespan. The natural materials in the upper layers are moisture wicking and repel allergens, making them great for hot sleepers or those who are highly sensitive. What’s more, you get an impressive 1 YEAR Sleep Trial and a 25-year warranty. Although higher priced higher than some other organic mattresses on the market, you may not get the same environmental accountability. Health savvy consumers know buying 100% Green often costs more. As a customer, if you like a Firm/Medium Firm mattress and are happy to pay more for the guarantee of a clean, green sleep then the Avocado brand is definitely worthy of your attention.

FAQ

Is Avocado good for back pain?

As a brand, Avocado do not make bold health claims about the orthopedic quality of their mattresses. Despite this, the Avocado Green and Vegan hybrids have had positive online reviews from customers praising their lumbar support. BUT, these are firm mattresses (medium-firm, once the topper is added).  You won’t experience a pressure relieving memory foam deep sink. The mattresses upper natural latex layer provides body conformance and bounce and both models feature this Quantum® Edge Elite Combi-Zone® unit in the base layer. This does have hundreds of pocketed coils conforming around your body for responsive support and targeted pressure relief. However, please remember that neither of these mattresses promise to combat back pain, we would probably suggest a Tempur-Pedic mattress may be better suited.

Is the Avocado mattress comfortable?

Because Avocado mattress are made using natural and organic materials (which are hardy too), expect the experience to be firmer, heavier and more solid than your average all-foam model. As we have said many times there’s no deep pressure relieving memory foam sink. Online Avocado customer reviews are mixed, some customers liked the lumbar support offered by the zoned innerspring base unit and credit this for their improved sleep quality. Others found the mattresses too hard and firm and complained of exacerbated aches and pains. Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan are both Firm mattresses (or Medium Firm, once you add the topper), and like any new mattress will take a little time wear in.

Is the Avocado Green and Avocado Mattress worth it?

Although Avocado was launched to fill a gap in the market by selling 100% green and affordable mattresses, they still have a fairly high price point. You will find cheaper organic mattresses on the market. But, will they have the same durability, environmental accountability or offer such a long warranty? Would you pay more for an eco-friendly, durable mattress which gives you a healthy, clean sleep for years to come? Our team has read through many customer reviews across various platforms, which were 90% positive. We are confident that once customers unbox their Avocado mattress and see the quality of the product, having paid a little more won’t matter (and remember you have a whole year to test it out). Also, the Vegan model is a great option for customers opposed to using any animal-by products.

Is Avocado mattress good for side sleepers?

Testing the Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan models against sleep positions, feedback from our team is that the standard versions are too firm for light to medium sized side-sleepers Heavyweight side sleepers (over 250lbs) should consider buying the additional Pillow Top, for an extra 2” layer of latex which increases the upper cushioning. Its upper layers of organic latex create a responsive, soft, cushioned sleep surface and its strong pocketed coils distribute your weight evenly, ensuring your spine has neutral alignment. We think lightweight side sleepers will find them a little too firm.

Can you flip an Avocado mattress?

No, customers should not flip their Avocado mattress. These latex hybrids use steel pocketed coils in the base to support the mattresses softer, latex upper layers. So, you should always make sure your mattress is right side up. If you want to extend the life of your mattress and ensure more even wear, Avocado suggest rotating your mattress once a month for the first six months, switching to once every other month after this. Another benefit with this brand is that the mattresses have sturdy stitched handles on both sides which makes lifting and repositioning the mattress easy.

Where can you buy the Avocado mattresses?

Avocado is a popular Bed-in-a-Box brand, but the company also has two Experience Centers based in the NYC and the Los Angeles metro areas, giving customers the chance to touch, feel and learn more about their natural sleep-related products before buying. Here are the store locations:

NEW YORK: Avocado, 12 Hudson Place, Hoboken, NJ 07030, Tel: 201-345-7694
