Ever wondered what it'd feel like to sleep on a cloud? That was Arthur Andreasyan, the founder of Puffy mattress's starting point when launching The Puffy - their first, all-foam, affordable mattress in 2017. Their upgraded Puffy Lux quickly followed, with their high-end Puffy Royal recently released. For a young brand, Puffy is already scooping awards in best mattresses lists, with TV appearances on The Ellen Show given them greater exposure. Puffy mattresses cost a little more than some of their competitors, but discounts and coupons even this out. Customers enjoy their cooling and responsive blended foam layers and their website boasts over 6,000 positive customer reviews.

Shipping is free to customers in the continental USA and Canada, with additional fees charged for goods sent to Hawaii or Alaska. They also ship to the UK too.

Old mattress removal:  Puffy do not remove your old mattress or offer a paid for mattress disposal service. The company advise customers to contact their local sanitation department to arrange a mattress disposal, or to get in touch with a local donation center.

Payment accepted, financing:  Puffy accept: Mastercard, Visa, AMEX, and Discover cards, they also offer a flexible finance option for customers through Select your goods online, apply during checkout and once your application is approved you select how many installments you want to pay off your goods. There is $0 interest if you pay in full within 6 to 12 months with Klarna.

Customers who want to start a returns process must email:  support@puffy.com  quoting their original order number. Day 1 of your Sleep Trial starts immediately your order is dispatched. If your goods were shipped to Alaska or Hawaii, Puffy cant reimburse for your original shipping costs.  Puffy’s 101 Night Sleep Trial and Return Policy only applies to customers who buy goods online from the PUFFY.COM website directly.

Sleep trial period:  All Puffy mattresses offer a 101 Night Sleep Trial. Puffy ask customers to sleep on the mattress at home for a minimum of 30 nights. If you are a newcomer to an all-foam mattress, your body can take up to a month to adjust. If, after a month, you are convinced this isn’t the right mattress for you, email Puffy to notify them of your return request. Allow sufficient time to coordinate your return and refund. All returned mattresses are donated to local charities. Once your mattress is returned, your full purchase price is reimbursed.

Warranties:  Puffy offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY on their mattresses, giving you coverage for the entire time you sleep on the mattress. The warranty’s small print says faults covered include manufacturing defects (dents or sagging which are over 1.5″) and not caused by improper use or unsuitable bed foundations. The warranty also includes manufacturing flaws on the zipped outer cover. In cases where there is a genuine construction fault, Puffy repair the product or replace it with a new model. After 10 years has elapsed, if a defect occurs, customers can buy a new Puffy mattress at a 50% discount instead of having theirs repaired and get to keep their old mattress as well.

Packaging and unpacking:  Puffy don’t offer a white glove delivery service and say their customers won’t need a set-up team because their mattresses are sent compressed, roll packed in a 42″ x 19″ x 19″ cardboard box that’s easy to unpack. Once out of its box, place the mattress over your bed base, remove the plastic packaging, unroll and watch as it expands into shape. You can sleep on your mattress the same day it’s unboxed.  Mattresses with memory foam layers can take up to 48 hours to regain their true thickness. So if your mattress feels thinner than you expected on Day 1, don’t worry as by Day 3 it is sure to be thicker and firmer.

Smell (off gassing), harmful chemicals:  Off-gassing is when chemicals called VOCs,(which are a byproduct of foam manufacturing) are released into the air as you unpack your mattress. This ‘off-gassing’ odor is common with foam mattresses. The odor is not dangerous and will begin to disperse after you open a window/door and ventilate the room. Our sleep team did notice an odor after unboxing these Puffy mattresses, however this faded once the room was fully aired.

Where are the mattresses made?  If you want an all-American sleep, then you are in luck as Puffy mattresses are completely USA made, from the outer cover, the foams and even the shipping box! Also, the company recently expanded their manufacturing division into Canada and the UK too!

Puffy mattress performance review

Mixed foam mattresses typically use blended foams to support your body frame, with cushioning and support around your neck, back and hips. Back Sleepers will want a Medium Firm mattress, Stomach sleepers a firmer option, with Side sleepers seeking out the sink, comfort and contour of foams. This is where Puffy’s mattresses excel as they accommodate a wide range of sleeper types. The soft, cooling, comfort foam in their upper layers lets you sink into a supportive sleep, soothing pressure points and being responsive enough to allow for easy upper movement.

Construction layers and materials used

During their early research and development stages, Puffy created and trademarked foams like their Cooling Cloud Foam™ and their Climate Comfort Foam™. The brand also use a Body Adapting Dual Cloud Foam layer that’s exclusive to Puffy. All the foams Puffy use are CertiPur-US approved. Puffy’s eco-friendly mattresses are also regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission for Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). The removable Zip-N-Wash outer cover used across the range is stain resistant and Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Certified.

The Puffy

First sold in 2017 as their affordable ‘one mattress suits all’ model, The Puffy was already a popular seller when it was remodeled in 2019.  This 10” triple layered all-foam model has a soft, neutral foam feel. Its gel-infused ‘Cooling Cloud’ top layer responds slowly to pressure; letting sleepers sink in to get a comforting hug around their hips and shoulders. The ClimateComfort™ second layer is a breathable transition foam soothing pressure points and neutralizing temperature spikes by dispersing body heat.  Its High-Density Poly Foam base layer boosts spinal alignment and stabilizes movement above. Another big plus for Puffy is that its zipped outer polyester cover is splash resistant and fully machine washable

The Puffy Lux

As its names suggests, the 12” Puffy Lux is a luxury upgrade of the Puffy mattress, featuring all 3 layers from the original model, plus 1 more. By introducing a new layer of body adapting Dual Cloud foam, this creates an overall softer, thicker mattress with a plusher memory foam feel and increased pressure relief. This exclusive Dual Cloud foam layer works with the Cooling Cloud layer to reduce strain from your body’s pressure points. This 4 layered model feels like responsive memory foam, as you sink into the layers comforting and cradling your body.  Its outer zipped cover is stain resistant and fully machine washable.

The Puffy Royal

The 14” Puffy Royal is Puffy’s thickest, most advanced foam mattress.  Its upper layers of infused and breathable foams are responsive and comforting, letting you sink in without feeling sunk. But its the exclusive zoned support which sets it apart, maximizing airflow and pressure relief. This complex foam layer offers firmer support around your heavier mid-section, with softer comfort along your neck and shoulder-line and is designed to improve spinal alignment, whether you’re a back, side or combo sleeper. Then its grooved channels circulate air, cooling and detracting heat into the base of the mattress. Its outer zipped cover is stain resistant and fully machine washable. This 5 layered soft-foam mattress sits at the upper end of the market and has a price tag matching its luxury design.

Puffy firmness and pressure relief

Always remember the feedback from our sleep reviewers are influenced by their height to weight ratio.  All-foam mattresses, like Puffy’s, soften more over time, so mattresses that start out as a Medium Firm, will inevitably become more of a Medium a few years down the line. Also all-foam mattresses are great for light to medium weight customers. If you weigh over 250lbs, we’d recommend The Puffy Royal which is a denser 14” mattress, featuring 5 layers, along with increased pressure relief and cooling properties.

The Puffy

The Puffy is an affordable, accommodating mattress for all sleeper types.  Its upper layer of gel infused Cooling Cloud Foam feels like airy memory foam, and its 2nd layer of super-soft Climate Comfort Foam responds slowly to pressure to allow for sinking and contouring; giving pressure relief for customers of a light to average body size. The High-Density Poly Foam in its base layer helps to align your spine and provide sturdy support. Overall, this 10” mattress has a mixed, soft foam feel and although the Puffy website ranks it as a Medium Firm, our sleep testers gave it a Medium for firmness.

THE Puffy Lux

The successor to The Puffy is The Puffy Lux, which at 12”, is a thicker, plusher upgrade with more of a fluffier, memory foam feel. By adding body adapting Dual Cloud Foam into the mattress’s second layer its designers aimed to boost the conformity and response of its upper layers, while offering a deeper level of pressure relief. Softer, and with more sink than the original, The Puffy Lux ranks as a Medium for firmness.

THE Puffy Royal

The Puffy Royal is their high-end mattress, letting you sink in to experience advanced pressure relief, with a little more bounce than its predecessors. Each layer is ordered according to its comforting or cooling capacity, like the infused cooling foam in its top layer creating a more neutral foam experience.  Its exclusive zoned support layer is made from varying foams that are softer around your head, neck and shoulders and firmer around your back and hips to relieve your pressure points and improve spinal alignment. This 14” mattress ranks as a Medium-Soft for firmness.

Sleep position and body type

Puffy’s proprietary upper foam layers are breathable, responsive and designed to relieve aches and pains.  Their all-foam mattresses are a great choice for light to mid-weight sleepers (220lbs and less).  The 14” Puffy Royal, their thickest and most advanced mattress uses advanced foams and targeted pressure relief and is a better suggestion for heavyweight sleepers (250lbs and under).  Although Puffy’s website says their mattresses are for sleepers who weigh up to 350lbs, our team would normally suggest a hybrid mattress for heavier people who like the comfort of memory foam, but want a sturdier level of support

The Puffy

Suitable for Back, Side and Combination sleepers with light to medium body frames (220lbs and under). The soft upper comfort layers cool, contour and cradle your body while you sink in to experience pressure relief and spinal support that is boosted by the HD foundation foam. The mattress is accommodating enough for combination sleepers who can switch sleep positions without too much resistance.  Although sold for ALL sleeper types, our reviewers ranked The Puffy as too soft for strict Stomach or Edge sleepers.

The Puffy Lux

Suitable for Back, Side and Combination sleepers, weighing 200lbs and under, The Puffy Lux is plusher, softer and fluffier than the original, with more responsive foam and thicker comfort layering.  Its focused pressure relief around your shoulders and hips make this ideal for Side sleepers who enjoy sinking into the mattress to feel deeper pressure relief, and who weigh 200lbs or under. The mattress is also suitable for Back and Combination sleepers.

The Puffy Royal

Suitable for Back, Side and Combination sleepers, weighing up to 250lbs, The Puffy Royal is ideal for Back and Side sleepers wanting targeted support, temperature regulation and comfort. This thicker, luxurious mattress features an exclusive zoned support, an advanced system of complex foams tailored around the needs of your body, with denser foams supporting your heavier hips and back and softer foam along your neck and shoulder-line to alleviate prevent pressure build up and encourage better overall spinal alignment.

Puffy edge support

Not every brand can score high in each category and Edge Support is an area where all-foam mattresses can struggle. All Puffy mattresses feature a soft, thick comfort layer which compresses easily, helping to create the cloud-like softness and quality the brand is known for. But the flip side of this soft compression is that the mattresses may be too soft for edge straddlers, who need stronger perimeter support. Assessing all the Puffy mattresses, our testers ranked them FAIR for their level of Edge Support. Our sleep testers said it didn’t feel like you were going to immediately roll out of the bed, but felt the edge support could have been better. Also, some online customer feedback criticized the edge support. Our sleep testers would recommend alternative mattresses for customers who are strict edge sleepers.

Temperature regulation

All-foam mattresses are known to retain heat and sleep hot, which isn’t great if you’re already a hot and sweaty sleeper. But, Puffy have developed gel infused cooling foams and layering techniques to try and overcome this. All of their mattresses include an exclusive Cooling Gel Cloud Layer with cooling beads to detract heat, along with a Climate Comfort Layer to improve breathe-ability and reduce sudden spikes in temperature, to create a more temperature neutral sleep. The Puffy Royal mattress is the brand’s state of the art cooling mattress, using heat regulating science to cool sleepers down naturally, featuring the above mentioned layers – working together with grooved foam channels to maximize airflow and minimize heat absorption.

Motion isolation and noise

Because The Puffy, The Puffy Lux and The Puffy Royal are mixed-foam mattresses incorporating similar layers, we expect a similar response when testing against noise and motion transfer. Luckily, all foam mattresses are silent, (if you think about it, there’s no creaking springs to wake you up). Our sleep teams then tested against motion transfer, assessing if movement on one side of the bed will travel across and disturb whoever is sleeping on the other side.  All-foam beds usually perform well at absorbing impact and isolating movement, and we are pleased to feedback that all of the Puffy mattresses, scored well on these tests. The original Puffy mattress, which at 10” is the slimmest of the models still isolated movement well, achieving similar tests results to Puffy’s two more expensive models.

Is Puffy suitable for couples and sex?

Puffy’s mattresses rank either as Medium or Medium Soft for firmness and have a mixed, soft foam feel boosted by their gel infused and slow response upper foam layers. Many online reviewers rave about their cloud-like comfort.  But some couples need a firmer, bouncier mattress for sex. Puffy’s comfort layers conform and relieve pressure, but the cradle you want during sleep isn’t necessarily what you’d want for sex. None of Puffy’s mattresses use latex or springs which can result in a lack bounce and edge support. The benefits of Puffy mattresses are that they are silent, discrete and use cooling foams and sleep tech engineered to dissipate body heat, increase airflow and neutralize temperature spikes. So that however hot or cold couples get on top, the layers will respond to neutralize this comfortably.

Durability and longevity

Puffy launched into the sleep sector and quickly grabbed the attention of consumers and competitors.  Their website features over 6,000 positive customer reviews and lists awards for Best Mattress 2020 (Independent Review Site) and Best Memory Foam Mattress 2020 (Our Sleep Guide), among others. Foams developed by their sleep teams are partnered with layering techniques to improve spine alignment and alleviate aches and pains.

Positive customer feedback is much higher than their negative reviews. Customers are thankful of their improved sleep and celebrate the comfort and quality of their new Puffy mattress. Negative feedback criticized the softness of the mattresses, with many expecting them to be firmer. Some customers did raise problems with sloping and sagging after just a short amount of time.  The lifespan of a traditional foam mattress is 7-10 years and because Puffy mattresses use proprietary foams we’d expect a longer lifespan.  Because the original Puffy mattress is only 3 years old, it is too soon to fully assess. Puffy must have confidence in the durability of their products to offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY!

Bed base

Want the good news or the even better news? Puffy’s all-foam mattress are compatible with almost ANY foundation: from Box Springs, Flat frames and Slatted Bed frames through to Adjustable Bed bases. In fact, their affordable Puffy mattress can be placed straight onto the floor, great if you like the minimalist look or are counting your dollars!

If you don’t have a base already, Puffy sell the following:  Puffy Mattress Foundation – a metal grid base made of heavy duty steel (supporting up to 1000lbs) and increasing airflow underneath. The Puffy Bed Frame, a solid bed surround frame with wooden slats inside. The Puffy Adjustable Base, an adaptable bed base sleepers can elevate or recline to relieve aches and pains, which also has massage settings and USB ports for charging your tech.

Puffy mattress complaints

Puffy’s website boasts over 6,000 positive customer reviews and trawling the online customer review sites, positive reviews outnumber the negative ones. However, our review team did discover some bad reviews, featuring negative customer feedback also.

  • A male married customer had issues with sloping and sagging after just a year of sleeping on the Puffy mattress with his wife. He said the mattress sagged and sloped inwards from the center and said it was like sleeping in a valley. He also complained that the responsive foam layers conformed too much, which meant moving around for sex was a challenge.
  • A few customers had issues with the returns process. One customer claimed that the burden is on the customer to find a local charity to gift your unsuitable mattress to. Claiming that refunds are only issued once Puffy receive written proof of this donation from the charity on letter headed paper, and that its up to the customer to co-ordinate this and to gather all this paperwork before being issued with their refund. The customer complained this was time consuming and stressful.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Puffy mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4.4/5

4.4/5

Puffy seem committed to improving their products, their customer service (A+ BBB ranking) and their community commitment. They updated 2 of their 3 mattress models after less than 2 years on the market. They also donate 1 mattress to a child in need every time 10 customers recommend and tag their brand on social media, AND they gift all their returned mattresses to charity. Although more expensive, (before discounts), Puffy mattresses accommodate a range of sleeper types and their neutral, mixed foam feel and their pressure relieving tech is what stressed consumers will always be looking for – hoping to sleep away those aches and pains.  Any customer wanting a comfortable, soft foam mattress with purchase protection (their lifetime warranty), should definitely check out the Puffy website.

FAQ

Which Puffy mattress is best?

This depends on your needs and the cash you have. If you are looking for a good performing affordable mattress, then The Puffy is their original ‘one suits all’ model, which is a popular seller with 10” and 3 layers to give you a decent bed for your buck. The Puffy Lux, is its upgrade, with a softer, plusher feel and a greater level of pressure relief.  If you have money to spend and want an extra bit of luxury, or if you weigh 250lbs or over, then The Puffy Royal may be for you. This is Puffy’s premium high-end, luxury 14” mattress with sectional zoned support for advanced pressure relief for targeted areas, along with temperature neutralizing proprietary features.

Do you need a Box Spring with a Puffy mattress?

Puffy mattresses can be twinned with a variety of bed bases and their website recommends using Box Spring foundations. Although, our sleep testers say be sure these are the newer style Box Spring bases, which are solid and work well with any of the Puffy models. If your Box Spring is an older style (with internal springs), be careful, we would not normally pair these with all foam mattress, as the springs could poke through and snag or damage the foam.

Where can you buy the Puffy mattresses?

Puffy is an established bed-in-a-box online retailer, so all orders must be made online via their website. Check out their mattresses and bed foundations along with their collection of sleep related merchandise at: https://puffy.com/

How long will a Puffy Mattress last?

Puffy are super confident of the durability of their mattresses and offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY; which is rare, setting them apart from their competitors. Most bed in a box retailers offer a standard 10 year warranty, because foam mattresses usually last 7 to 10 years. Puffy’s warranty lasts for as long as you sleep on the mattress and covers manufacturing faults (like dents or sagging over 1.5”). Puffy’s all-foam mattresses use advanced synthetic mixed foams developed by their research teams. Our team say expect to get over 10 years of life from these mattresses, providing you maintain them well and use a correct base.

Can you flip a Puffy Mattress?

No, you must not flip your Puffy mattress. All of the models across Puffy’s mattress collection layer their foams strategically using softer, gel-infused, more responsive and breathable memory foams in the upper layers – so that sleepers can move around easily. Each layer has a purpose and is strengthened by the high-density solid foam in the base. So, this is why its important that your mattress should always be placed right side up. We would normally recommend rotating your mattress at 180 degrees every 6 or so months if you want to prolong the life of the foam, although Puffy advise on their website that this isn’t necessary.

Is Puffy mattress better than Tempur-Pedic?

As pioneers of memory foam mattresses, Tempur-Pedic sell mattresses in-stores and online.  Known for using high-quality memory foams with reliable contouring and support, they also offer white glove delivery. Puffy is a Bed-in-a-Box retailer selling 3 models of mixed foam mattresses, (The Puffy, The Puffy Lux and The Puffy Royal), each available in one firmness level, with no white glove delivery. Both Tempur-Pedic and Puffy mattresses excel at limiting motion transfer. Puffy mattresses have a soft, plush feel which is ideal for light to mid-weight sleepers and feature exclusive cooling tech. Expect to pay twice the price for a Tempur-Pedic mattress as you would for a Puffy mattress. So, if you want a softer, affordable, temperature neutral mattress with a memory foam feel, choose Puffy. But if you want that classic memory foam feel, the chance to try in store and select different firmness levels – and pay extra for that bankable reputation then choose Tempur-Pedic!
