Douglas mattress performance

If you are Canadian and a fan of memory foam, there is plenty to love about the Douglas mattress. It’s got all the best characteristics of foam – contouring and amazing pressure relief – while being cooling at the same time. The fact that it is exclusively available to Canadians is an exciting prospect for all the patriots out there – but also has a strong sustainability benefit too.

Its Tencal cover, for instance, is made from sustainable materials – while the mattress as a whole is manufactured using renewable energy. Local shipping in a smaller-than-usual box also has the effect of reducing your carbon footprint. Altogether, this is a bed you can feel good about – and it feels good every night too. Read on for more details.

Construction layers and materials used

The Douglas Mattress has a simple, all-foam design – but there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the quality and nature of materials.

At its base, the Douglas has six inches of high-density support foam, which gives the bed its stability, durability, and contributes to its motion isolating ability. This is followed by a transition layer of foam. This is two inches of Elastix foam. While the Douglas undoubtedly has a traditional memory foam feel, this layer gives it a touch of responsiveness, which is appreciated by combination sleepers and as you move on this bed.

The top comfort layer is two inches of gel foam – made with 40% less carbon than other foams on the market. This layer also contributes to the responsiveness of the mattress. Moreover, it has cooling properties which will have you sleeping on the cool side of temperature neutral on this bed.

This cooling layer is complemented by the Tencal cover, which is breathable and moisture wicking. This is a sustainable material, which creates almost zero waste and is biodegradable too.

Douglas mattress firmness

Douglas markets their mattress as a medium-firm, but we are going to politely disagree. In our experience, we would say it is slightly on the softer side for most average-sized sleepers. We think it is more along the lines of a medium – and this is worth noting as you shop. The heavier you are, the softer this mattress feels, which is something to keep in mind.

Sleep position, pressure relief and body type

The Douglas mattress is superb at relieving pressure and contouring to the shape of your body – like a big, foamy hug. As mentioned above, we found it to be a medium – and the firmness of your future mattress, together with your dominant sleep position, has a bearing on whether this mattress will work for you in the long term.

The good news is that the Douglas mattress works for most sleepers across all sleep positions. If you are a side sleeper – or a combination side sleeper, it is an especially good match. This comes down to the pressure relief on hips and shoulder contact points during the night. If you are a combination sleeper, another perk is that it is fairly effortless to shift from position to position as you sleep thanks to the slight responsiveness of the foam.

If you are a strict back or stomach sleeper, while many people shouldn’t have any trouble with the support on offer, this is something to consider. It is widely acknowledged that firmer mattresses suit these positions better and the Douglas could be a little too soft if you have needs around support.

When it comes to body type, we recommend the Douglas to people in petite and average size groups. Heavier people may not get adequate support from this all-foam bed – with their weight sinking through the comfort layers to the support layer. This could cause discomfort and pain over time. If you are still interested in giving it a try, be advised that mattresses feel softer the heavier you are and, while this may work for some side sleepers, it is going to further reduce the supportive qualities for back and stomach sleepers.

The smaller you are, the firmer the Douglas feels. Most petite side sleepers find the Douglas mattress offers more than adequate pressure relief. It is also worth noting that petite back and stomach sleepers have a greater chance of hitting the sweet spot for support.

Douglas edge support

The edge support on the Douglas Mattress is very good. This means edge sleepers and couples sharing smaller sized beds feel secure throughout the night. It also serves to keep you from feeling that roll-off sensation when you are sitting on the edge of the bed.

Douglas mattress temperature regulation

Where mattresses are made from foam, there is a natural concern around heating up at night. This is because foam uses the body’s heat for its properties and some foams retain this heat, which can be uncomfortable.

This is not the case with the Douglas mattress, which sleeps a little on the cool side of temperature neutral. This can be attributed to its gel foam, together with the Tencal cover which is breathable and moisture wicking. The movement of moisture away from the body means the body’s natural cooling processes are put to work to keep you cool.

Motion isolation and noise

One of the perks of memory foam is that it tends to be silent and isolate motion well. The Douglas is no exception. We detected very little transfer of motion from one side of the bed to the other. This feature is especially appreciated by light sleepers or anyone who shares a bed with a restless partner. We also detected no sound upon movement – another way light sleepers are accommodated by the Douglas.

Is Douglas suitable for couples and sex?

The motion isolation and noiselessness of the Douglas have already got our thumbs-up for the Douglas, which are fantastic features for couples. When it comes to sex, however, it is not our first choice. Now, the performance of mattresses when it comes to sex is essentially a personal preference. That said, most people tend to prefer bouncy or responsive mattresses and sinking into the materials is not ideal.

The Douglas has a more typical memory foam feeling, with a slight responsiveness. This may make changing position and moving around the bed more difficult than on mattresses made from more responsive foams or hybrid beds.

Durability and longevity

A common downside on all-foam mattresses is durability. Even very high-quality foams may deteriorate or sag in what many consumers consider to be a small amount of time. When it comes to durability, we expect the longevity of the Douglas to be that of an average all-foam mattress – up to about six or seven years. From online consumer reviews, we have found the majority of Douglas owners have been pleased by the lifespan of their mattress.

Bed base

Douglas recommends a solid frame or foundation for their mattress. They also sell in-house frames if you want to go the whole hog on your bed setup.

Douglas mattress complaints

We didn’t come across many complaints about the Douglas online, which is a good sign. The few we did find related to the following:

  • We read a couple of complaints relating to a lack of firmness. If you are a back or stomach sleeper or have special requirements for support, please bear this in mind before buying the Douglas.
  • We also saw a couple of reports about poor customer service, although we also found evidence of good service in response from goodmorning.com.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Douglas mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4.5/5

4.5/5

We have been hard-pressed to find many faults with the Douglas mattress. If you live in Canada and you are shopping for an affordable, all-foam mattress, Douglas should be one of the mattresses at the top of your list of choices. As with any mattress, it is not going to work for everyone, so please read through this review and other online materials in detail to find out as much as you can about the feel, advantages and disadvantages.

However, it gets a glowing recommendation from our team for being all the best there is about foam. The icing on top is the environmental sustainability of these beds – a culture we cannot fault.
