Mattresses have come under scrutiny in recent years for the chemicals we can potentially bring into our homes and that’s why brands like Naturepedic are so important. Naturepedic was founded to directly address these concerns. The result is a range of organic mattresses made within a health-centered, sustainable ethos. This is the kind of mattress that makes going to bed feel all kinds of good. Another high-end feature of these mattresses is that you get to customize your mattress in a range of ways. This means you tailor the final product to suit you and your partner perfectly. Find out more about the EOS range in our Naturepedic mattress review below.

Who are Naturepedic EOS mattresses for?

  • If you are an eco-shopper concerned about health and wellness, these organic mattresses are a natural choice. Vegan construction is an option on these mattresses. They are certified non-toxic and adhere to very high social and environmental standards.
  • Couples – especially those with very different sleeping preferences. The Naturepedic is customizable, with different split options to cater for different sleeping types.
  • If you like to shop options, the EOS is the definition of customizable. Not only do you get the split option mentioned above, the EOS also has three models, tiered for luxury, with different comfort levels available for each model.
  • If you love latex – and even if you don’t. If you really don’t like the feeling of this mattress material, Naturepedic will give a comfort layer of micro-coils instead if you specify this on your order.
  • People of all sizes will find a mattress between the three.
  • If you’re looking for a little but of luxury (and by little, we mean a lot).

Who won’t love Naturepedic EOS mattresses?

  • If you are shopping on a budget, while the Naturepedic offers exceptional quality for price, it isn’t the cheapest bed available.
  • If the traditional memory foam feeling is your firm favorite, you probably won’t take to latex immediately. Even the all-latex Trilux model will be more responsive and springy than your memory foam bed.
  • While the Naturepedic is certainly not a warm mattress, it also can’t be said to have active cooling properties. If you sleep very hot and this worries you, it might be worth looking specifically for beds with active cooling features.

Naturepedic company policy

The story behind Naturepedic exhibits a true commitment to green, sustainable, and health-driven business. This family business was founded in 2003 when Barry Cik set out to find a non-toxic crib mattress for his grandchild. What started out as being chemical-free mattresses for kids has grown into a family of organic mattresses designed to offer a safe, green, affordable option to mattress shoppers.

Naturepedic holds a range of certifications and awards for their work. These include GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified (the standard recognized by the USDA), GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard), and Organic Content Standard. It is also certified non-toxic, holds the UL GREENGUARD Gold certification for being emission-tested and formaldehyde-free. Wood and packaging meet the Forest Stewardship Council standards. Naturepedic is also a proud member of PETA and has the Green America stamp for their responsible practices for their customers, employees, community, and environment. Many of the materials are locally sourced and certified too.

Naturepedic holds an A+ BBB rating.

Shipping:  At the time of writing, Naturepedic was offering free shipping within the continental U.S (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). Their website does indicate that this is for a limited time only and their free shipping option is only available from time to time. We are so accustomed to free shipping in the online mattress world, so this is something to look out for at the time of ordering.

There are also shipping options to Canada available. Orders ship through UPS or FedEx Ground and take three to seven business days from the date of leaving the warehouse. While most orders will be handled by UPS and FedEx Ground, if you order a foundation (and in some other instances), curbside freight can be expected. You should be appraised of the details from Naturepedic.

Old mattress removal:  Naturepedic offers white-glove delivery and old mattress removal for a fee.

Payment accepted, financing:  Financing is possible through Naturepedic and is powered by Affirm.

Returns and refund:  You aren’t going to get completely free returns if you decide the Naturepedic Mattress isn’t for you. If you want an outright return, you will pay for shipping to return the mattress within the 90-day guarantee period. If it is the comfort level in issue, they will give you a free layer swap on the EOS mattresses to help you find the firmness that’s just right for you.

Sleep trial period:  Naturepedic gives you 90 nights to decide whether the EOS is for you or not.

Warranties:  Naturepedic EOS mattresses come with a 20-year limited warranty, which is above the norm for online mattresses.

Packaging and unpacking:  Naturepedic is a bed-in-a-box mattress but, in this case, you get two boxes. The mattress layers are compressed, rolled, and wrapped in plastic. The boxes have clear instructions on which box to open first and their online resources are really helpful in giving a step-by-step guide on setting up your mattress.

Smell (off-gassing), harmful chemicals:  Bed-in-a-box mattresses typically release a smell on unboxing called off-gassing. Even mattresses containing natural materials tend to emit a smell once the plastic has been removed. We picked up on no smells at all on unboxing the Naturepedic. If you are worried about harmful chemicals, you can rest easy knowing that this mattress has a long list of certifications around its organic construction, environmentally friendly profile, and non-toxicity.

Where are the mattresses made?  Naturepedic mattresses are made in the United States from domestic and internationally sourced materials.

Naturepedic mattress performance

For some, latex may be something of an acquired taste. This is mostly because the feel is quite different to what you are used to if you have been sleeping on a memory foam or innerspring mattress for most of your life. There are many arguments for natural latex mattresses when it comes to sleep quality. This includes health advantages for anyone concerned with allergens and chemicals.

While the sustainability factor of Naturepedic mattresses is outstanding, there’s something else about their latex construction which makes them a great bed. If you are a fan of a responsive mattress, latex provides especially good pressure relief, spinal alignment, and comfort. This is a great feature for the average Joe, but it’s also almost therapeutic if you are looking to combat existing aches and pains.

If you are considering a Naturepedic EOS mattress, one of the most noteworthy things about the brand is the fact that you can essentially build your own bed to suit your needs. Buying a mattress can be a once-in-a-decade occasion and this makes for a fantastic customer experience. You and your partner can get the firmness you like by selecting the comfort level you need – to be split across the mattress.

It doesn’t end there. Not hot on latex? You can replace the latex layer with micro-coils. If you are vegan, you can opt for a wool-free option to suit your ethics. You are given a premium shopping experience from tailoring your bespoke order to the quality of the bed you receive. This makes mattress shopping an event – as it should be.

Construction layers and materials used

Naturepedic EOS Classic Mattress

At the top, the Naturepedic EOS Classic has a quilted organic cotton cover, including organic wool batting (with a vegan non-wool option available) and PLA fiber. These are healthier than synthetic materials and are naturally hypoallergenic and moisture wicking. Under this is a cotton-wrapped three-inch layer of organic latex. On this and all EOS mattresses, you can opt to replace the latex layer with 1.5- or three-inch micro-coils, which are also individually wrapped in organic cotton using no glues or adhesives.

The springs on this mattress are eight inches and are individually wrapped in organic cotton. They also do not use any glues or adhesives in the coil section of the EOS beds. This rests on top of organic cotton batting. The whole mattress is wrapped in an organic cotton encasement.

Naturepedic EOS Pillowtop Mattress

The Pillowtop model has a dual encasement construction. It features the same quilted organic cotton cover with wool batting and PLA fiber and three-inch organic latex, cotton-wrapped layer. These two elements are contained in a separate organic cotton pillowtop encasement. Under this is another three-inch layer of organic, cotton-wrapped latex which rests on top of eight-inch, cotton-wrapped coils. The coils have organic cotton batting at their base. These layers are encased separately in their own organic cotton encasement.

Naturepedic EOS Trilux Mattress

The Trilux is Naturepedic’s all-latex model in the EOS line. It has the organic cotton quilted cover with organic wool batting and PLA fiber. This cover lays on top of three individual three-inch organic latex comfort layers – each wrapped in organic cotton. This rests on an organic cotton batting foundation. The Trilux has a single organic cotton encasement.

Naturepedic EOS mattress firmness

Naturepedic EOS mattresses have a modular construction, which is customizable to suit your firmness and comfort requirements. You can even mix and match firmness levels in a single mattress by splitting the mattress for couples – perfect if you have very different tastes. This also means you can change the layers long into the future as your mattress ages or as your needs change.

Each mattress in the EOS range features one or more three-inch latex layers. These come in soft, medium, and firm options. If you opt to go for micro-coils over latex, you are given a choice between soft and medium.

The hybrid models (the Classic and Pillowtop) come with different coil options. You can choose between plush and firm, with a special order option of extra firm.

While each model comes with its own firmness options, we did not individually test each of these. That said, there are some universal elements to consider around the firmness of the EOS mattresses. Firstly, these firmness assessments are made with the average-sized person in mind. If you are petite, you will experience the mattress to be firmer. If you are heavy, the overall feel will be softer. Another thing to keep in mind is that, while latex is very pressure relieving, many experience latex to be slightly firmer than they expect – especially initially.

Naturepedic EOS Classic Mattress

The Classic comes in five firmness options: Extra-Firm, Firm, Cushion-Firm, Medium, and Plush. We found the Cushion-Firm came in at about a medium, so you can reasonably expect the Medium and Plush to be incrementally softer and the Firm and Extra Firm incrementally firmer.

Naturepedic EOS Pillowtop Mattress

The Pillowtop also comes in five firmness levels: Firm, Cushion-Firm, Medium, Plush, and Ultra-Plush. The Medium in this case is somewhere between a medium and medium-firm and, again, you get softer and firmer around that as you move through the different firmness levels.

Naturepedic EOS Trilux Mattress

The all-latex Trilux also comes in five firmness levels: Extra-Firm, Firm, Cushion-Firm, Medium, and Plush. The Cushion-Firm is about a medium when it comes to firmness for most people.

Sleep position, pressure relief and body type

One of the top features of latex is its impressive pressure relieving properties. This natural material is fantastic at keeping you aligned and supported, with different firmness levels catering for varying sleeping positions to different degrees. It is commonly agreed that back and stomach sleepers need firmer mattresses to keep the body horizontally aligned in these positions. Side sleepers, on the other hand, need pressure relief – particularly at the shoulders and hips. With the different firmness options available from Naturepedic, they’ve got you covered by sheer variety.

Remember, your body type will affect your choice of mattress here too. Let’s take a closer look.

Back sleepers

If you are a back sleeper, the firmer the better is the rule. With extra-firm options in the classic and Trilux varieties, firm mattresses are a possibility if you have special needs around support when sleeping on your back. Most people would probably find the comfort options around the medium mark very comfortable too. We would suggest one of the hybrid models – the Classic or Pillowtop – over the all-latex Trilux.

Side sleepers

We recommend softer models for strict side sleepers and a few options exist between the three models and myriad comfort levels of the Naturepedic EOS. The Pillowtop features the softest mattresses in the range, which is something to consider if you are a petite side sleeper or someone who battles with pain in their hips and shoulders. Most people, however, should find the medium-type options very comfortable when sleeping on their side.

Stomach sleepers

As with back sleepers, stomach sleepers tend to need the support of firmer mattresses. The reason for this comes down to misalignment on softer mattresses. If your hips sink too deeply into the mattress, you will probably experience pain from sleeping in this position. As with back sleepers, the extra-firm varieties are there for people who need the added firmness and support, while most people should get the requisite support all the way up to about a medium.

Combination sleepers

Combination sleepers are spoilt for choice with Naturepedic. Our suggestion is to use your body type and predominant sleeping position to make a call on the comfort level you need. For instance, if you spend most of the night on your side, but you’d like a bit of support for when you’re on your back or stomach, something with a medium firmness may be the order of the day.

Heavy individuals

The heavier you are, the softer any mattress will feel. One of the hybrid models – the Classic or Pillowtop – will be a wiser choice for support. If you are a back or stomach sleeper, we would suggest going as firm as possible to ensure maximum support.

Petite individuals

The smaller you are, the firmer the mattress will feel – which means you will find firmer mattresses rock hard in some instances. If you are a stomach or back sleeper on the hunt for support, this may or may not make too much difference to you. The petite people who will feel it most are side sleepers. The lighter you are, the more prudent it will be to maybe err on the side of softness.

Naturepedic edge support

If you are something of a cliff-hanger at night, the edges of the Naturepedic EOS mattresses should give you enough support for your sleeping habits. They have focused on this element and you can really tell from the way it performs. All three models give you a secure feeling right up to the edge – a big benefit for couples, where every square inch of mattress matters.

Naturepedic EOS mattress temperature regulation

Latex, while usually cooler than memory foam, can be warm for people who struggle with temperature regulation when they sleep. The open-cell construction of the organic latex layers in all three mattresses makes them breathable options if you are on the market for organic latex.

However, if you are concerned about temperature, using the customizable nature of Naturepedic can help. Firstly, opting for a hybrid means heat can move away from the body, so the Classic or Pillowtop will be better for anyone worried about sleeping hot. If you go for micro-coils instead of latex, this will be even cooler. The firmer your mattress, the more you sleep on top of the bed, which can also be cooler.

In addition to the construction of the latex, the cotton, wool, and sugar cane-based PLA materials are naturally breathable and wick moisture for slightly enhanced cooling. Across all three, most people can expect to sleep at a comfortable temperature.

Motion isolation and noise

While motion is not completely deadened on the Naturepedic EOS mattresses, we believe few will be disturbed by motion transfer during the night as the motion detected was very slight. The hybrid models are both very good, with the all-latex Trilux model being worthy of a little extra praise here. This will come down to a few different factors, but the modular construction will aid in performance here. Similarly, none of these mattresses are completely silent. We picked up on some sound on movement with all three models. Again, this will not disturb most sleepers and they are certainly not loud mattresses by any stretch of the imagination.

Is Naturepedic suitable for couples and sex?

It is widely accepted that more responsive mattresses are better for sex – giving couples the ability to move around the mattress and change positions with ease. Latex is fantastic for this, making it an excellent choice for sex. The added spring from the coils in the hybrid Classic and Pillowtop models make them a slightly better option over the all-latex Trilux.

Durability and longevity

Another big pro for latex is its durability. In general, latex lasts longer than most foam mattresses – often closer to about ten years than the average seven. Latex does age, however, and it is possible that indentations can form in the latex layers over time. This is not a given in all cases.

Another thing to consider here is the quality of the craftsmanship which goes into every Naturepedic mattress. Naturepedic puts this down to the skills of Amish craftsmen. One of the first things that will strike you about the Naturepedic is the fine construction and their longer-than-average warranty is indicative of a belief in the quality of their products.

Bed base

Naturepedic offers a range of frames and foundations on their website, so you have the option of a complete ground-up overhaul when you buy your new mattress. The EOS range weighs in a little heavier than your usual memory foam mattress, making a solid platform the best choice to ensure the mattress is supported. If you go for slats, make sure they are no more than three inches apart. It’s always worth checking with Naturepedic on whether your existing foundation has any impact on your warranty.

Naturepedic mattress complaints

We searched online to get an idea of real customer complaints and here are a few reviews we found from consumers online:

  • The mattress deteriorated prematurely and the loss of support resulted in pain and discomfort.
  • One customer mentioned being unhappy with the latex smell from a Naturepedic mattress.

Other mattresses

Amongst their other mattresses for adults is the Chorus and Halcyon models. The Chorus comes standard without a latex layer. This mattress has the same organic cotton, wool batting, and PLA quilted cover, but has 1.5-inch micro-coils on top of eight-inch pocketed coils. It doesn’t have the customizable nature of the EOS. It comes in a standard cushion-firm feel – but still meets healthy and sustainable benchmarks of the rest of the range.

The Halcyon, on the other hand, is all about luxury for what Naturepedic calls the ultimate organic sleeping experience. It can also be personalized to suit sleeping preferences. There are three models to choose from: Azure, Arcadia, and Elysium. The luxury materials include organic cotton and wool batting, as well as alpaca and cashmere for exquisite softness and comfort. Each comes with customizable comfort levels.

The ten-inch Azure has a three-inch latex layer with six-inch coils. The Arcadia is 13 inches with six inches of customizable latex layers and six-inch coils. The Elysium is an extraordinary 16 inches with three inches of customizable latex with 15-inch coils.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Naturepedic mattress brand?

OUR RATING

4/5

4/5

What’s important when you’re shopping for a new mattress? For much of America, health considerations have become the most important thing that matters. Whether you have existing allergies requiring a special sleep setup or not, Naturepedic is worth looking at for being made from the good stuff. Certified, organic, natural materials are the calling card of Naturepedic EOS mattresses.

For some, latex lies in the realms of the unknown and, for the price, not everyone is willing to give it a try. What makes Naturepedic stand out across all mattress brands is the level of customization you get when you decide on one of their mattresses. You don’t necessarily need to take a gamble on latex (they have a mattress option for you too). If you do, your mattress is fine-tuned to suit you and your partner individually. This acknowledgement of the different things that matter to mattress shoppers elevates the experience to an event. Unless you have very specific preferences outside of the Naturepedic offering, you can build a mattress to your specifications.
