Who are the Signature Sleep mattresses for?

  • A variety of sleeping types – Because there are so many mattress models to choose from in the Signature Sleep range – 27 in total – there is something that will suit the basic needs of most sleeping types and circumstances.
  • Anyone who is looking for a mattress at budget prices – These mattresses are all priced below market standard, but they are also designed and manufactured using cost-saving methods that compromise some parts of their quality.
  • Anyone looking to get a mattress offline – Signature Sleep mattress and accessories can be bought at third party retail outlets such as Walmart or Target.
  • Sleepers looking for an inexpensive memory foam mattress – Across the range, there are some really interesting variations of traditional memory foam mattresses such as the Flex Charcoal Memory Foam mattress. These will suit the base needs of sleepers looking for something with the traditional memory foam feel.
  • Anyone looking for a simple, cheap innerspring mattress – While the Signature Sleep mattress series may not be geared toward luxury standards, there are some users who really enjoy the response they get from certain innerspring models like the Justice and Inspiration mattresses in their Black Collection.

Who won’t love the Signature Sleep mattresses?

  • Anyone who is looking for a long-lasting mattress – Signature Sleep mattresses are designed to be financially accessible on a mass-production scale. Their ethos is quantity over quality and their mattresses only come with a one year warranty. If you are looking for longevity in your mattress you will probably have to search elsewhere.
  • Consumers who really don’t enjoy off-gassing – There have been some user complaints about high levels of off-gassing from these mattresses, particularly from the thicker memory foam models.

Signature Sleep mattress performance

There are a grand total of 27 mattresses making up the entire Signature Sleep mattress line. These are subdivided into 6 collections that vary in their overall price range. We’ve selected 6 mattresses from 4 of the collections that we feel may cover the basic comfort requirements of most sleeping types. Below is a short breakdown and overview of each of the mattress models we’re covering in our Signature Sleep mattress review

Gold collection – Signature Sleep Gold Select
The Signature Sleep Gold Select mattress is a short, simple mattress aimed at providing very basic comfort levels for sleepers. The mattress is just six inches high and consists of a very minimalistic layering structure. This is a good mattress for someone who is looking for a very cheap and temporary sleeping solution.

Black Collection – Justice,  Inspiration
The Black Collection is punted as the more luxurious end of the entire Signature Sleep range. The collection is made up of primarily innerspring based designs. The Justice and Inspiration mattresses are slightly different examples of the mattresses in this respective collection. Both designs center around supporting their innerspring support structures.

Honest Collection – Honest Elements
The Honest collection is Signature Sleep’s attempt at providing a mattress to the general public using more organic materials and manufacturing methods. The Honest Elements mattress in this collection is their sole showcase towards the cause but has some appealing design elements for people looking for a middle ground between affordability and eco-conscious consumerism

Signature Collection – Flex Charcoal Gel – Contour Hybrid
The Signature Collection is the most affordable selection out of the entire range. It still comes with an interesting design or two even at such a rudimentary price range. The Flex Charcoal Gel mattress in this range caters to people who need a blend of comfort and temperature regulation, while the Contour is a hybrid design that focuses on providing pressure relief to sleepers.

Construction layers and materials used

Each mattress of the 27 in the Signature Sleep range has its own unique design and layering system. Depending on their primary purpose and price tier, these designs and layering systems will vary on component count and type, total height profile, as well as overall quality and durability. Below we’ve provided a brief overview of the layering in each of the mattresses we’ve chosen to review. These are not definitive and may be altered by the manufacturer over time.

Layering Breakdown

Signature Gold Select
Standing just 6 inches high, this mattress has one of the lower height profiles in the collection. It comes with a simple polyester cover which is common in more affordable mattresses. Its comfort layer consists of high-density polyfoam, which is what manufacturers usually put in the support bases of their layering systems. This layer sits on top of a support base with 13.5 gauge pocketed coils.

Signature Sleep Justice Mattress
The Justice model in the Black collection is one of the sturdier designs in the total range. It has a single layer of gel memory foam as its comfort layer is centered over 5 layers of the same high-density polyfoam used throughout the entire mattress range. These initial layers rest on top of a level of 15 gauge coils which then are then further supported by a polyfoam support base. This mattress has a total height profile of 14 inches.

Signature Sleep Inspiration Mattress
The Inspiration mattress also comes from the Black Collection and is the Justice’s shorter, slightly more breathable sibling. It consists of identical layers of convoluted polyfoam in its support base and comfort layer, which we find to be a really intriguing design concept. Like the Justice, the Inspiration has an innerspring layer that consists of 15 gauge pocketed coils.

Signature Sleep Honest Elements Mattress
Signature Sleep’s Honest Elements mattress is the only bed they have with eco-friendly certification. The wool used in their comfort layer is OEKO-TEX Certified which means it is 100% Organic. Its innerspring layer consists of micro coils which are meant to enhance motion isolation. The cover in this mattress is also made using aloe vera based textiles, which gives the mattress a much more appealing odor than its more synthetic counterparts.  This mattress is also reversible.

Signature Sleep Flex Mattress
The Flex mattress comes out of its more affordable Signature Collection. The comfort layer is made from a charcoal-based gel-infused memory foam, which is designed to help with moisture retention and overall temperature control. This comfort layer is placed on top of a base of pocketed coils to help with pressure relief and contour support. This mattress has a 12’’ height profile.

Signature Sleep Contour Hybrid Mattress
The Contour mattress is another one of the reversible models in the Signature Sleep mattress range. It has even distributions of high-density polyfoam on both its top and bottom ends.  These polyfoam layers sandwich a support core made up of  15 gauge pocketed coils no different to the ones used in the rest of this mattress range. This mattress comes in height options of 8 and 10 inches.

Sleep Signature mattress firmness

Firmness is generally the first factor of comfort that most sleepers grad their mattresses on. Different firmness levels also suit different sleeping types and it’s really handy to know which level suits you best. The six mattresses that we’ve picked all sit above the neutral mark on our firmness scale. These mattresses are all just above medium firmness levels on our firmness charts. The firmest of these is also the shortest. At just 6 inches tall, the Select Gold sits at around 8/10 on our firmness scale. It owes its firmness to the high-density polyfoam used as its comfort layer. The Honest Elements is the most neutral of the entire series, so if you are unsure of which firmness best suits your needs, try this option.

Below is a simple chart to help give you a better understanding of how each Signature Sleep model weighs upon our firmness scale. These are not definitive stats and we advise you use this as a simple guideline.

Sleep position, pressure relief and body type

Just like firmness, everyone has their own set of preferences or needs when it comes to pressure relief. This will depend on a few factors such as your weight class, age, and sleeping habits such as your primary sleeping position. Thankfully this is where Signature Sleep appeals to customers, as their intricate range has something to suit the basic needs of most major sleeping types. We’ve listed some common sleeper types below and picked out which mattress in the Signature Sleep range might suit their needs best.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers generally require a mattress that has above neutral firmness levels. Most of their weight is concentrated around the hips and lower back area when laying in this position. If a mattress is too soft it will cause this area to sink too deeply into the surface and create strain along the bottom of the spine. The Justice mattress in the Black collection seems to offer the most suitable support for back sleepers. It has multiple layers of polyfoam under a buffer of gel memory foam in its construction, which creates a sturdy support system for back sleepers to comfortably maintain their sleeping position.

Side Sleepers

For those who tend to sleep on their side, pressure relief is an especially vital factor to consider when buying a mattress. These sleepers generally rest best on mattresses that conform to the contours of their body. These sleepers create various levels of pressure around their knees, hips, sides, shoulders, and neck area, so their pressure relief needs to be more dispersed than that of back or stomach sleepers. We found that the Contour hybrid mattress in the Signature Collection had the kind of quick pressure response needed for side sleepers to settle into the resting form without any major hindrance.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers have a similar set of sleeping requirements to back sleepers. In order for them to sleep comfortably, they need to be able to lay flat without having their hips sink into the mattress. Firmer mattresses generally cater to these sleeper types best. The Inspiration model in the Black collection might be the best mattress in this line for stomach sleepers between 150 – 220lbs. Those needing something with a bit more support can also opt for the Justice model in this collection. Both have the kind of support core systems that can help resting bodies stay level during slumber.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers generally need the quickest forms of pressure response out of most major sleeping types. This is to allow them to be able to switch positions comfortably without disrupting theirs or their partner’s sleep with any shifting movements. We recommend trying out the Flex charcoal gel mattress in the Signature Collection if you are a combination sleeper. It has a simple design that focuses on a pocketed coil support core and a gel-based comfort layer. This should give most combination sleepers between 150-220lbs enough tensile support to allow for smoother transitions between sleeping positions.

Heavy Sleepers

It goes without saying that heavy sleepers generally require sturdier support cores in their mattresses. They also generally require. added edge support as well as moderate temperature in their mattress designs. We couldn’t really advise any of these beds as our primary pick for heavier sleepers, as we do believe you’ll need to look elsewhere if you are above 220lbs and looking for a long term buy. If you are above 220lbs and are looking for a temporary solution that will only last a year or two, you could try out the Justice model in the Black Collection or the Flex Charcoal mattress for its temperature regulation capabilities.

Petite Sleepers

Most light or petite sleepers below 150lbs will require a mattress that is soft enough to let the weight of their frame sink into the surface level of the bed. If a mattress is too firm or hard it causes resistance against the body which is not conducive to a good night’s rest. We feel that these mattresses may all be just a bit too firm for body weights below 150lbs. It may be best to look elsewhere for a bed that has a more plush feel if you fall into this category of petite sleepers.

Signature Sleep edge support

A mattress with dependable edge support makes it considerably more appealing than its competition. Mattress edges should not have any major sag or dip under the weight of its user. Strong edge support is very advantageous to couples who require more surface area to sleep on then single sleepers. It’s also vital for sleepers who need support for entering and exiting the bed, such as the elderly. Out of this range, we feel that the Justice mattress in the Black collection may be the best performer in the area of edge support. It has the sturdiest feel of the entire range, and this translates into its edge support as well. There is no major roll-off or sagging when most users rest their weight on the perimeter of this mattress, which indicates a design concept that has taken edge support into consideration.

Signature Sleep mattress temperature regulation

Most consumers have to take temperature regulation into consideration when looking for their next mattress. For some these elements are more fundamental to their good night’s rest than others. Sleepers who generate more body heat than others during sleep may need some form of active cooling in the comfort layers or covers of their mattress. It’s highly important for these mattresses to have sufficient airflow and ventilation within their structures so that they don’t retain excess moisture or heat.

The Signature Sleep Flex has a gel memory foam that is infused with charcoal for its comfort layers. This hybridized foam has some active cooling that draws heat off the body of the sleeper and sends it throughout the rest of the mattress It’s innerspring layer also consists of individually pocketed coils, which breaths much easier and lighter than memory foam or polyfoam support core structures. The Flex mattress is our top pick for temperature regulation out of the Signature Sleep range.

Motion isolation and noise

If you’re a sleeper who is easily woken up by even the slightest disturbance, then motion isolation and noise is a pretty significant element for you to consider when buying a mattress. Memory foam mattresses generally have better motion isolation than innerspring models as they respond to shifting pressures at a much slower rate than innerspring mattresses. With that in it’s also handy to note that you won’t want to get a mattress that is too rigid or it will not diffuse the ripple effect of moving sleepers efficiently.

We thought that the Honest Elements mattress was an interesting contender in this area as it has a unique micro coil design which has the absorption qualities of memory foam while still having the same tensile integrity that is required for a person to shift their positions quietly and smoothly without any major resistance.

Is Signature Sleep suitable for couples and sex?

Couples looking to invest in a mattress for both of them will have to account for more than just their individual sleeping requirements. Sleeping in a couple means trying to find a nocturnal co-existence between two varying sleeping habits, so a mattress with efficient motion isolation and noise diffusion is highly beneficial for couples with restless sleeping partners. Couples who want to enjoy an active sexual life will look to find a bed that has enough sturdiness and reactive support to accommodate for any vigorous movement during sexual activity.

We think that the Justice model offers this kind of combination of structural integrity and elasticity for couples that want to lead a healthy sex life. The Justice model also has fairly reliable edge support compared to its counterparts, so couples have the advantage of getting the use of the entire surface area of the mattress.

Durability and longevity

This is unfortunately a glaring problematic factor in the Signature Sleep design concept. Even though the Signature Sleep series is accepted as a budget tier mattress, it still has a few design flaws that could have been avoided regardless of the manufacturing costs. There have been various consistent consumer concerns ranging from the quality of the foam used in the layering systems of mattresses to the premature degradation of the pocketed coils and edge support systems of the bed. As we mentioned earlier the Signature Sleep mattresses come with a 1-year warranty and no sleep trial, which may not be very appealing to most mattress buyers.

Bed base

The Signature Sleep’s vast mattress range is further backed up by a generous selection of sleeping accessories including a menu of bed bases and foundations. It’s helpful to understand which base works best with each base or foundation on offer. Memory foam models should generally be kept away from solid platforms as this usually leads to excess heat and moisture retention. Innersprings are also redundant when placed on box springs, so try and stay away from this combination if you can. Because these are mattresses that will degrade quicker than most mattresses on the market today, we advise not using any of these models on an adjustable base as we can only predict this may aggravate the wear and tear on these mattresses’ short lifespan.

Signature Sleep mattress complaints

  • Signature Sleep mattresses are cheaper than your everyday market standard mattress. As such there have been a variety of complaints relating to the durability of these mattresses ranging from their edge support to their comfort layers and inner springs. It’s imperative to remember that these are not by any means designed for luxury use.
  • There have been some consistent consumer remarks about the levels of off-gassing from some of these models. This has been especially prevalent in the gel memory foam mattress such as the Gold collection.

Our final verdict: Do we recommend the Signature Sleep mattress brand?

OUR RATING

3.5/5

3.5/5
  • Signature Sleep mattresses are a very handy buy if you are looking for a mattress that is cheap, simple, and temporary.
  • We are really impressed at the total amount of mattresses on offer in this range. It takes a lot of research and trial and error to design and build a mattress, and Signature Sleep has done that an impressive 27 times.
  • The Black Collection in this range is marketed as their luxury class, and while we feel it does not measure up to market luxury standards it certainly does offer a level of comfort that can compete with a few slightly more expensive mattresses on offer today.
  • It is handy to have a mattress that is accessible through third-party retailers such as Amazon.com, KMart, and Target. This makes the Signature Sleep series slightly more accessible than mattresses sold exclusively from their manufacturer. Thanks again for reading through our Signature Sleep mattress review. We hope this was helpful. Rest easy.
